Fascinated by #Moltbook? The Duke Polarization Lab has been studying how humans interact with large groups of bots simulating humans for the past three years, and we've learned a lot. For example, this forthcoming paper in AJPS documents how a "spiral of toxicity" unfolds: osf.io/preprints/os...

Interested in #Moltbook? Social scientists have been studying whether LLMs can simulate entire social media platforms for some time. 2.5 years ago we published the paper below, and there have been dozens of studies since then which I reviewed last year in this piece: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

I had the great honor to award Yann leCun Duke's inaugural "Distinguished Lectureship in Society-Centered AI" last week. One of my favorite parts of his lecture was his argument that one of the greatest risks of future AI models is that they may not be built by a diverse enough group of people.

Do podcasts play a decisive role in politics? This fascinating new paper maps the ecosystem using a large database of podcast transcripts from 2020. My first take away: politics is dwarfed by entertainment (not unlike social media): arxiv.org/pdf/2411.07892

It is *vital* not to understate the prevalence of anti-semitism, but we must also be careful not to overstate it as well. Previous reports that 1 in 5 young people deny the Holocaust were probably very inaccurate according to this careful analysis from Pew: shorturl.at/rCHN1 .

Fascinating new experiment shows that people who interact with an AI chatbot vs. a person report "feeling heard" more often. However, the effect disappears when the people learn they are interacting with an AI chatbot (Bing Chat): shorturl.at/cnuwx.

Youtube, Twitter, and LinkedIn usage are all trending downward over the last year according to the latest USC Neely center survey on social media usage. Reddit, on the other hand, appears to be growing.

It's important to criticize social media companies when they make mistakes, but also applaud them when they achieve progress (e.g. in reducing incivility). According to the Neely Center's recent surveys, both Nextdoor and Facebook have made real progress on this front over the last few months.

Yet another paper casts doubt upon the YouTube algorithmic radicalization theory. It still can't rule out emergent effects, IMHO, but it adds to an increasingly strong pile of evidence that algorithms are not the key driver of polarization (at least in the U.S.). dcknox.github.io/files/LiuEtA...
