Google News is one of the last things I still rely on Google for, and it's honestly just turning to shit. "Technology", eh?

Overpowered e-bikes are a scourge. Our 500watt/32kph maximum is a good limit. That said, wherever police intend to start testing e-bikes for being capable of exceeding that limit (and they SEIZED this one for going over) THESE ASSHOLES BETTER DAMN WELL BE DOING THE SAME FUCKING THING FOR CARS! 🙄

Ours are all yellow here in Vancouver. It's the same as telling pedestrians to wear bright colours - none of it matters when drivers are staring at their phones.

Same in Burnaby. What I don't get though, is even the design is bad? Why are the bus lanes used as turning lanes? I think of Willingdon, for example, where cars turning into BCIT block the bus lane, but there's a million pedestrians crossing, so everyone always gets stuck? It's ridiculous!

WestJet, AirCanada, and Porter all list Vancouver/Toronto flights on Wed as $743. All of them. To the dollar. You know, because we have a free market that supports competition, but also, I guess, that must just be what the cost is to fly someone there, right? What a crock of shit. Fuck Capitalism.

But, if I deviate to 16th Ave, which is also partly designated for cycling (but just a crappy shared street with a painted bike), there's a four block gap that's not designated for cycling at all, but then my plan only requires 45 meters elevation, saving me 20 meters of climbing over the 2.5km.

I'm trying to plan a 12km ride from my place in Metrotown to New West. There's a 2.5km stretch through Edmonds where, if I roughly follow the official designated "Southeast Bikeway" (SEB) route, my plan will have 64 meters in elevation gain...

The parking lot at Still Creek Costco was utterly gridlocked. The line of cars extended all the way back onto the Hwy 1 ovepass bus lane. I parked instantly in the bike rack right next to the entrance, and fit everything I wanted on my e-bike! 🚲🥰

I asked @cityofvancouver.bsky.social to make cycling on the BC Parkway not suck so much...
City of Vancouver - General Feedback. Request details:

Hi,

I regularly cycle on the BC Parkway.

The section that is on Vanness Ave (on the road, sharing space with cars), between Earles Street and Rupert Street - too many motor vehicles use this as a shortcut, and pass me dangerously close and at high speed.

Can you please consider adding some type of modal filtering to prevent so much vehicle traffic from using this street unnecessarily.

Thank you.

Then there's the whole treatment section, where it's pretty clear they intend to drop a psychopharmacologic bomb on these patients. I'm no doctor - but I am *very* skeptical that prescribing patients back to health is as straightforward and effective as this makes it sound?
Treatment under section 31 needs to be holistic, and include all psychopharmacologic and psychosocial interventions required to stabilize the patient, treat or mitigate the mental impairment, and decrease the risk posed to self and others. For example, in a patient with treatment resistant schizophrenia and substance use disorder, a combination of clozapine and long-acting buprenorphine may be required to decrease the behavioural and affective repercussions of the persistent psychosis. In such a patient, who based on experience would otherwise remain destabilized, deteriorate, and become a risk to self and others,
buprenorphine would be used not to treat the patient’s substance use disorder (which may persist unabated) but as an adjunct to antipsychotic treatment (i.e., seeking to decrease the psychotic syndrome).

So, I just looked into what BC's requirements actually are to commit someone to "involuntary care" under the Mental Health Act - and I gotta say, it's so general and broad that it's kinda freaking me out a bit...
As further detailed in the Guide to the Mental Health Act, involuntary admission and treatment under sections 22 and 31 of the Mental Health Act (the “Act”) can only be provided to a person
who meets all of the following stringent criteria:

• the person is a person with a mental disorder which requires treatment;
• the disorder seriously impairs the person’s ability to react appropriately to their environment or associate with others;
• the person requires care, supervision and control in or through a designated facility to prevent their substantial mental or physical deterioration, or for the protection of the person or for the protection of others;
• the person requires treatment in or through a designated facility; and
• the person cannot suitably be admitted as a voluntary patient.

For the purposes of this document, the criteria in the second and third bullets together will be referred to as “mental impairment”.

No subtype of mental disorder is excluded from these provisions, and conversely, no specific subtype of disorder per se warrants treatment under these provisions.

There's ~6 million automobile accidents in the United States every year. If anyone wants to write an article "reckoning with the dangers" out there - the REAL ones, it'll start (and end) with that.
Car accident statistics in the U.S. 2022 Facts. Average number of car accidents in the U.S. every year: 6 million. More than 116 people die in car accidents every day. 2.3 million people in the US are injured every year in car accidents. 7,522 pedestrians killed.

So, I almost got killed on my ride last night... I was heading north on Boundary Road, after the bike lane just ends, and dumps you out into the right lane of the street. Luckily, that lane is mostly empty, as it's a turning lane back at Lougheed. It was after 8pm, so traffic was light...

This bit from south Richmond makes me sad, with the red blip back up to Westminster Hwy and back. There's actually a railway line through there, and a road (see circled in second image), and I was kinda hoping they'd be able to negotiate something...

Fifth (last but not least): Riding west on Powell (before the multi-use bike path starts), cars were passing me, but some crazy car decides the car in front of him wasn't speeding enough, so pulled *right* to pass, and almost knocked me to the curb while doing so (it pulled BARELY in front of me).

Fourth: north on Boundary (after bike lane just ends and dumps you into the road), I needed turn left (blue arrow), hand signaled, a nice car (middle lane) slowed, I merged left in front of it, but *2nd* car behind it didn't know why it slowed, pulled out left ACCELERATING RIGHT AT ME (red)!
