Cell biology, aging, vasculature, choroid, retina, just enough omics to be dangerous. Peace and love, friends.

They have sweet ultrastructure in 2D, the reconstructed serial sections would be uh-may-zing.

I've seen this with epifluorescence where it's like the mounting media is getting "the bends" in real time, worse with shorter wavelengths. For a long time after I first saw this we started storing mounting medium in a vacuum jar, but I think it was a bad lot of mounting medium (we use AquaMount)

Thanks for your careful work in cataloging this indefensible and despicable practice. Commercial Abs are always kind of a crap shoot even before this all came to light. I wonder if it's not time to do some combination of true blue @DSHB-antibodies.bsky.social and going back to making our own PCAbs.

... it turns out I thought my department had sent in the nomination but I had forgotten to give them a Title of the grant so I missed the window and my application wouldn't be considered. I did help perform the reviews though.

Once while I was literally typing away on a foundation grant I got an email from said foundation asking if I'd be a reviewer for their upcoming cycle. I thought that's pretty weird, I can't review applications where I have one and the same mechanism. Well I guess I'm off the hook...

What a fantastic idea! ISER is ”bottom up” instead of a “top down” meeting with members contributing the session ideas. Something along these lines sounds wonderful for the next biennial meeting!

Is the reviewer jealous that you probably have more time still on this planet than they do and are taking it out on your grant?

Wishing yours better luck than mine! I check a lot, I like to see it before I get the email that there's a result. Feels like I'm in the driver's seat. Similarly I like to quit the zoom call before I see "The host has ended the meeting" pop up. Not sure what all that says about me.

For some prestige award applications from scientific associations, linking the Scholar page is a requirement. Also if there's a guest speaker and I want to see what their "deal" is, that's where I look. It makes sense to keep it buffed.

While it's not "random", different study sections see and weigh different perceived strengths and weaknesses differently (>50% of reviewers are ad hoc). I'd say address the criticisms in good faith and go for it!

Tipping etiquette/ golden rule question. I’m invited to give a talk and the sponsoring department pays a driver to lug me from airport to hotel. It’s usually like 20 minutes or something. Assume the department has it covered or tip (which probably has to be cash). If tip, how much?

Trying to find some protocols for cone isolation from frogs that don't involve transgenics or freezing. There is a surprising dearth of information out there for cone isolation? Seems to be mostly rods. Is anyone familiar with any simple-ish protocols? 🧪 👀 #xenopus
