maybe "been" sets the precedent for FLEECE becoming schwi

it's kind of amazing that the first vowel in "speedometer" is (for most people?) KIT/schwi/schwa and not FLEECE

the average Belgian response to someone explaining a word's origin you were curious about would be more like... "aaaahhhh oké" maybe

I never realized how "USA" it is that the average caller on A Way With Words goes "oh wow, that's so interesting!" until they had a German lady call in and she went "mhm .... well yes... mhm... I knew that too"

Quick drawing of something I really enjoy.
Me coming home and greeting Brioche (a cat sleeping on a rolly cart) by saying "Brioche I'm home!"
He sits up and you can see the left side of his soft round head is concave from where it's been squished against a pillow for several hours.

matsushima
Matsushima (松島) is a group of islands in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. [...]
A well-known haiku describes the islands as so striking that the poet is at a loss for words:

松島やああ松島や松島や Matsushima ya / aa Matsushima ya / Matsushima ya
Matsushima ah! / A-ah, Matsushima, ah! / Matsushima, ah!

in the 2000s-2010s, some people equipped themselves with whatever vile stuff they needed to stoop to to be heard. I can imagine the logic having been: maybe if we say "k*ll all men," people will get so angry they'll listen to what makes us say that

lynn @chordbug.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
a tactical brilliance in woke chess! now any complaint that this is transphobic can be met with a volley about "angry white tears" — haven't you heard it's ok to stereotype if you just add "white"? I think this whole game is kinda dumb

lynn @chordbug.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
another example of all this is people turning their "trans women be like..." takes into "white trans women be like..."

it's hard ofc, to talk about systemic issues; neither baseless sweeping statements or statistics or "anecdata" are quite right. there's no short way to say: "I perceive my society as set up to tolerate [bad thing] from men in a way that invites that bad thing"

I'm plugging in a bunch of other demographics now and it's kind of surprising what sounds acceptable to me and what sounds intuitively "hey you can't say that". maybe it also depends on what the category is?

lynn @chordbug.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
a thread I saw has: > Experience tells me most men will do [bad thing]. I feel like anecdotal generalization over a big demographic like this is either rhetorically okay, or not. "Woke 1" allows it if the demographic is a powerful majority, but can we come up with something better for "Woke 2"

his name is lethargic. he's an IRC chatbot I wrote in 2011 and has been through IRC, skype, and is now on discord (in private servers with friends.) the algorithm has been unchanged since the beginning.
Lethargic’s algorithm

Lethargic’s primary response generator uses a bespoke algorithm that uses neither templates nor markov chains.
Take the user’s input:
Hello lethargic, how are you doing today?
Then pick a random message from a dataset of old IRC logs
brb throwing my computer against the wall
Then we interlace these two sentences, one word at a time, excluding ending punctuation:
Hello brb lethargic, throwing how my are computer you against doing the today wallLethargic's algorithm continued
Hello brb lethargic, throwing how my are computer you against doing the today wall
We replace “lethargic” with “me” and other pronouns so that they are inverted (like ELIZA)
Hello brb me, throwing how your are computer me against doing the today wall
Finally we pass this amalgamation into google translate a bunch of times through multiple languages to get our response:
Hey, wait a minute, how's your computer doing today after I hit my head against a wall?

the idea that Legolas can't tell the hobbits apart is so funny to me so please imagine: the hobbits can't recognise Legolas if his hair is different
Lord of The Rings fanart depicting Legolas with his hair out of braids and wavy, walking past the four hobbits who are whispering amongst themselves. Frodo asks, "Who is that?" to which Sam responds, "Stay close, Mr Frodo! I've never seen that Elf before!" and Pippin blankly adds, "Where's Legolas? Did he eat him?" which Merry takes seriously and exclaims, "Dear me! We must warn the others!"
