March 18, 1879: Cluny Macpherson, the inventor of the gas mask, was born in St. John's, Newfoundland.
During the First World War, Macpherson served as a medical officer. After a German gas attack, he created a mask made of chemical absorbing fabric which fitted over the heard. Prototypes were developed soon after and adopted by the British Army. Macpherson returned to Newfoundland in 1916.
