For mothers, especially single mothers, daycare is part of your employment decision. The question isn't how much I'm making? But how much is this job paying me after daycare costs? Is it worth getting a job (being in the workforce)?

I worked in a hospital for awhile, but had to switch to a lower paying medical job with daycare hours. The rural grade school onsite daycare was heavily subsidized, so it only cost $30 a month twenty years ago. When we moved back to the Bay Area it was $500. I don't know how low income afforded it.

When my daughter was young, we lived in rural California and in the Bay Area. She went to grade schools in both locations, and they both had after school daycare until 6pm. That was great until summer when school was out, then I used the local summer camp daycare which cost as much as my paycheck.
