Bingo. Very close to where I grew up, while reflecting how my language was shaped by my parents and grandparents.

Image of my results from the NYT 2024 published dialect quiz, built from 2013 data. Three heat maps of the continental United States. The first one centers on Detroit, due to my use of the phrase “Devil’s Night” (thanks Dad). The middle focuses on the Great Lakes and spreads across the upper Midwest/Great Plains, with Grand Rapids, Michigan pinpointed. The third shows that same area, with Toledo, Ohio as the pinpointed city; both of those maps are based on my usage of the word “pop” in reference to soda.

These maps are far and away more accurate for me than that vibe coded AI slop being passed around on socials right now. No clue why, it kept locating me in the Pacific Northwest, specifically Oregon. I’ve never even been there.
