With #StarWars #EdgeoftheAbyss reviews landing (2 weeks until pub!) one of the real triumphs of Rebecca Roanhorse's middle-novel in the #ReignoftheEmpire trilogy was telling a complete/compelling story and NOT just a bridge story. With real stakes and changes.

Novel you care about 1 singular story, and maximizing it. Collection you want each story to shine but also fit into a cohesive whole. Balance stories complementing each other with also standing on their own And the collection is just doing a lot of the same things many times (editing/revising/etc)

We never would announce a project that didn't have a pretty finalized story. So usually many months if not earlier (which is not the same as saying the book is 100% done). Covers we try to have done a month or two ahead of announcement but sometimes (as with Twin Crossroads) that gets a bit tight.

I still use it specifically for my daily to do list and weekly action item list. Keeps my list of objectives focused instead of being lost inside other notes. And the physical act of crossing stuff off remains as satisfying as ever. But that's about it.

Big question. Starts with deciding the tone, mood we want which helps define an art style, artists Next is what element of story - emotion or scene, etc to help determine specific vis elements. Then we just iterate and try diff approaches till it works or we realize we were wrong and start over.

Fun fact about #StarWarsLegacy. Among several inspirations that directed us toward Tython was a bit of storytelling from the Aphra #40 comic. The Martyrium of Frozen Tears on Tython begged the question - what other ancient structures related to the Jedi Order might be there?

Any of the moments where someone comes to the booth "on a mission" for their friend or family member. They don't always know exactly what they are getting or why but to see how earnest they are and then happy when they get the thing. It's lovely seeing people care for the joy of others so much.

Only cap when specifically referring to the Rebel Alliance organization (in universe) or referring to the show Rebels (out of universe). Anto Kreegyr is a rebel but not a Rebel. There are rebel bases but only things like Yavin or Hoth would be Rebel bases etc. Most of the time then, it's lc.

It's not retconning to find the white space in a story and fill in more of it or expand. It's a challenge but not too hard. We pay attention to a lot of stories and are always talking about opportunities and what we need to be aware of

One of the frequent ones is putting technology that is too modern (like internet like tech) in books. That and writing about the Force the way it manifests in videogames. That's specific to that medium but not correct for prose. And the whole metric system thing
