The day of the state tests, I met up with Aabiana after school to see how she felt she did. She just rolled her eyes and laughed, telling me she had randomly filled in the bubbles. The test for her was a setup. In 10 years of public education, she had never attended a school that had not been labeled failing by the state. She'd gone her entire freshman year without a math teacher but now was being tested to prove that her math acumen was on par with other ninth graders. Aabiana refused to participate in a state test that did not take into account the substandard education that same state had allowed her to receive. She could not be labeled a failure if she did not try. It was hard to deny Aabiana's logic.
Somehow, she was expected to value an education for herself when it was clear no one else did."
