Livetweeting the court hearing on ABC v FCC. ABC wants the court to stop the FCC's hearing on early renewal of ABC's licenses plus all other retaliation against ABC's speech in violation of the First Amendment. Threshold question is the court's jurisdiction: Must ABC wait for a final order to sue?

Hostage taking of state funding for closing the digital divide is all about prioritizing ISP profits over the public good. It's counterproductive: to undermine broadband access/affordability/adoption only kneecaps those who have the most to gain.

The FCC this week proposed to change or sunset E-Rate-which supports internet service and equipment in schools + libraries. This fits right into the trend to limit poor kids' education opps for unrelated reasons, i.e. school having help paying the ISP bill = kids having too much screen time.

That any gov't cares enough abt digital rights orgs to make a stink shows just how important surveillance and censorship are to preserving + expanding their power. But also shows the calls for privacy, security, freedom of expression are increasing...which means digital rights orgs are succeeding.

I talk about how succeeding at using or advancing or knowledgeably regulating AI depends upon first closing the digital divide. You gotta crawl before you walk, and it's the same here. Which is why jerking states around on using fed $ on broadband access/affordability/adoption is counterproductive.

Same with movies and tv: unless a DVD was released and you bought it (and you have something that plays DVDs), that show or movie you love will come and go from streaming services, perhaps not to be available again.

That’s it, no original thought or lived experience or burning drive to create. Is the result of that “learning” transformative, per fair use? I don’t know, but the way tech company folks talk about AI always irks me, like it’s a person they’re training, and that’s just not the case.

Chhaya Kapadia @chhayakapadia.bsky.social · 26/06/2025
In reality, “training AI” means (yes, simplistically!) the machine catalogs the text of the books, scrambles it, and spits out a mish-mash of those books per your instructions. An LLM can’t create something original because the ONLY thing it “learns” from is what it’s been trained on. /2
