Ha! Good catch: it looks nothing like the data presented in the associated paragraph.
Respondents indicated what challenges they face when doing data visualization [Figure 18]. The most common challenge was lack of time, selected by 84% of visualizers who responded to this question. Technical limitations of tools (81%), too much effort on non-viz activity (80%), and learning new tools/technologies (79%) were the next most commonly selected responses; technical limitations of the tools was not as big of a challenge in prior years. Across all of the challenges, lack of time (30%), too much effort on non-viz activity (22%), and accessing data (20%) were rated as the most significant challenges, the same top significant challenges as 2023 and 2024.

Asked about AI, Prof Saffron O'Neill said that they published a paper based on a study where they asked AI to create visuals for media and none of it was useful. They were all clichés. The speakers and audience appear quite skeptical of the potential contribution of AI.

On LinkedIn, @daniellealberti.bsky.social just announced that Axios disbanded its data visualization team yesterday. @visuals.axios.com 📊 She is now looking for a new job. A leader in our field.
Danielle Alberti
Managing Editor, Data Visualization

Yesterday I learned that Axios was eliminating the data visualization team I've built and led for nearly seven years. So, for the first time in a long time, I'm looking for what's next.
I'm so proud of the team we built. At our largest, we were 13 designers and developers spread across the country, making dozens of quick-turnaround visuals a day for the National and Local newsrooms while also producing some stunning longform storytelling. I managed the team entirely remotely, and I'm especially proud of the culture we created while rarely being in the same room. People felt safe trying something weird to see if it landed. We genuinely liked working together, respected each other's work and wanted our teammates to succeed. Even as people moved on to other teams over the years, they kept cheering each other on. Creating a team like that is possibly the best thing I've done in my career.
I also really like making things work better. I put a lot of energy into building systems and workflows and automating processes so we could do more without just asking people to work faster. We built tools that were the envy of the industry and gave people across the newsroom the ability to make sophisticated visualizations themselves.
I sometimes joked that I was trying to automate myself out of a job. Whoops.I've spent most of my career in data visualization, but l've always been a bit of a generalist. I've been a reporter, an editor and a developer, and over the years my job has grown to include everything from engineering and tooling to project management, strategy and people management. The common thread is that I like figuring out how things work, why they aren't working and how to make them better.
So I'm casting a pretty wide net. I'd love to keep working in data visualization, but I'm also very open to jobs outside journalism and roles that don't have "data visualization" in the title.
Mostly, I'm looking for somewhere I can do more of what I'm good at: building great teams, developing talented people and creating systems that help them do great work.
If that sounds like something your team needs, or you know someone I should talk to, please reach out.
Comment, DM, or email me at alberti.danielle@gmail.com.

The Effects of Ads on Beliefs and Implications for Consumer Search
Jean-Pierre H. Dubé, Ilya Morozov, Franklin She & Anna
Tuchman
WORKING PAPER 35596
DOI 10.3386/w35596
ISSUE DATE August 2026
We study how in-store display ads communicate information about a product's price and quality, both directly through ad content and indirectly through inferences consumers draw from the presence and content of the ad. We run an incentivized experiment in a simulated online store, randomizing ad exposure, ad content, and the advertised product's price, while also eliciting participants' beliefs and choices. Display ads shift beliefs about price and quality, even when the ad copy does not directly reveal either attribute. We provide evidence that these belief shifts have a causal effect on searches and purchases of the advertised product. Using a stylized search model, we show that while visibility explains most of the ad effects, belief updating explains a statistically and economically significant share. Casting ad content choice as an information design problem, we show that advertisers may find it optimal to conceal product information even when it exceeds consumers expectations.

I keep hearing how scientific visualization is conservative because of the journal constraints. But I'm looking at the Nature guidelines for scientific figures and... they're not that bad? 📊 www.nature.com/nature/for-a...
Figures

Nature requires figures in electronic format. Please ensure that all digital images comply with the Nature journals’ policy on image integrity.

Figures should be as small and simple as is compatible with clarity. The goal is for figures to be comprehensible to readers in other or related disciplines, and to assist their understanding of the paper. Unnecessary figures and parts (panels) of figures should be avoided: data presented in small tables or histograms, for instance, can generally be stated briefly in the text instead. Avoid unnecessary complexity, colouring and excessive detail.

Figures should not contain more than one panel unless the parts are logically connected; each panel of a multipart figure should be sized so that the whole figure can be reduced by the same amount and reproduced on the printed page at the smallest size at which essential details are visible. For guidance, Nature’s standard figure sizes are 90 mm (single column) and 180 mm (double column) and the full depth of the page is 170 mm.

Amino-acid sequences should be printed in Courier (or other monospaced) font using the one-letter code in lines of 50 or 100 characters.

Authors describing chemical structures should use the Nature Research Chemical Structures style guide. Some brief guidance for figure preparation:

Lettering in figures (labelling of axes and so on) should be in lower-case type, with the first letter capitalized and no full stop.

Units should have a single space between the number and the unit, and follow SI nomenclature or the nomenclature common to a particular field. Thousands should be separated by commas (1,000). Unusual units or abbreviations are defined in the legend.

Scale bars should be used rather than magnification factors.

Layering type directly over shaded or textured areas and using reversed type (white lettering on a coloured background) should be avoided where possible.

Where possible, text, including keys to symbols, should be provided in the legend rather than on the figure itself.

Letícia Pozza, leader of Odd Studio (Brazil-Spain), will be “slowly stepping away from data visualization”. 📊
Letícia Pozza
CEO at Odd Data & Design Studio
Most women change careers around age 39.
As I turn 38, I Will most definitely add to that statistic ;)
I am slowly stepping away from the data visualization industry. I have been working on data interfaces and communication since I started my career in 2012, and plan to continue using the skills I have learned - and making sure these values are very present - in my next move. This is not the end of Odd Data & Design Studio, but it is opening space for it to become something else.
This does not mean leaving clients or projects I still have to deliver behind, but I am being more selective and focusing on topics that make sense for this next era. So no, please don't stop reaching out for projects; this is a sensitive and slow shift.
Before it fully happens, I want to make most of the content I have produced available online and share more about the challenges and work behind more than 100 projects delivered during my career. So I'll post about what I have accomplished as a stepping stone to what's to come. Entrepreneurs also leave updating their portfolio last, so I will make sure to not only keep it alive, but also properly recognize the people who have built it with me.
I have been mentioning this to some people in my circle, but I also want to thank my whole network for supporting me over the last 15 years of my career. I could never have imagined coming this far. I will make sure to dream even higher for the next 15.
