For many years, it was assumed that the prehistoric cave paintings of people, mammoths and hunting scenes were created by men. Analysis of the handprints often used to "sign" these paintings now suggest that most of the artists were women. #CelebratingWomen

Celtic chieftain’s bird helmet! An astounding military helmet from some 2,200 years ago! The bird’s wings are hinged so that they flapped when the wearer moved! From Ciumești, Satu Mare County, Romania 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a remarkable helmet of a Celtic warrior chieftain dated c. 250-175 BC. The helmet body is made of iron, now brown in colour, with some fragments missing. On top of the helmet perches a large bronze bird of prey, now greenish-grey in colour, with outstretched wings made of sheet bronze. The wings are attached to the bird’s body by hinges, allowing them to flap up and down when the wearer moved, likely suggesting flight. There are coral-red and white enamel inserts in the eyes. There is a modern blue support frame beneath the wings and a modern blue replica beak for display purposes.

It was found in a warrior’s grave at Ciumești in Romania, in 1961. Other military equipment amongst the grave goods of the Celtic warrior’s tomb included an iron coat of chainmail and two of its bronze appliques, two bronze greaves and an iron spearhead, as well as clothing accessories (an iron fibula and iron belt buckle) and two pottery vessels (a biconical vase and a bowl).

The timeless appeal of ancient glass! 🤩 This Roman glass cup is about 1,700 years old, yet its bold blue and green dot decoration looks strikingly modern! It wouldn’t look out of place today! 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a Roman-era rounded glass cup, which shape-wise looks like half an egg! It has gently curving sides that narrow slightly toward a rounded base. The rim is straight. The museum record says the blown glass is colourless with a slight greenish tint. In my photo it is looks colourless with a frosted white appearance. Around the body are scattered raised dots of glass in rich turquoise and deep cobalt blue, giving it a simple but striking spotted decoration. Near the rim there are four incised concentric circles. Height 8 cm. The cup is displayed on a glass museum display shelf. In the background the slim neck of a glass vase can be seen.

This artwork is titled "A Buttercup with a Butterfly and an Insect", created by the 18th-century Bavarian artist and engraver Barbara Regina Dietzsch.
Signature Dark Ground: The composition is built on a rich, solid black background. Dietzsch painted this dark wash over the entire sheet of vellum first, allowing her bright subjects to vividly gleam forward with dramatic contrast.Intricate Medium: The original work was executed using bodycolour (gouache) and gum arabic on vellum. This combination enabled her to achieve an incredibly smooth texture, vibrant depth of color, and high precision in the details.Ecological Perspective: True to the traditions of the Nuremberg artistic circle, Dietzsch showcases a multi-petaled blue and coral buttercup alongside an accurate entomological study, highlighting a small green butterfly and a distinct insect perched among the lower leaves.

This artwork, titled Moonshine (also known as Moonlight), was created by the Swiss-German artist Paul Klee in 1919.
The image you've shared is a 1919 painting by Paul Klee titled Moonshine (also commonly referred to as Moonlight). This work is a classic example of Bauhaus abstraction, where Klee uses simple geometric shapes—squares and planes—to create a nocturnal atmosphere.

my latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.
