They/them. Chemistry teaching faculty at UMBC. LongCOVID. Programming, equity, and non-traditional paths in chemistry education. Centering humans and hope. Opinions very much my own.

Sometimes I think about how I used to get panic attacks about gas regulators and now I walk around the lab singing a little song to my bestie the giant wrench I use to hook and unhook all things compressed gas

A friendly reminder that Bluesky has this fantastic toggle in Settings >> Accessibility that will require alt text before you can post images. Toggle it on and be more #Accessible!
A screen shot of the Accessibility settings shows the top toggle. When turned on, this setting will require posts with images to include alt text before you post. No longer do you have to remember!

Do chem majors need to know how to light a bunsen burner? If so, when should they learn it?

Reading for an FLC on experiential learning, thinking about how the existence of large courses is like the existence of grades: it invades my brain and short circuits creativity and good learning design.

Did you know the wasabi in most sushi restaurants isn't wasabi? Or that a chemical synergy between dried seaweed and raw fish enhances sushi's savoury flavours? Learn more about sushi science with this infographic, as requested by my sushi-mad seven-year-old 🍣 wp.me/s4aPLT-sushi #ChemSky 🧪
This infographic titled "Sushi chemistry: nori, wasabi and sticky rice" explores the science behind sushi. It features three main panels with illustrations, chemical structures, and explanations. The left section explains how amylopectin in rice creates stickiness and how acetic acid from vinegar aids gelatinisation. The middle panel covers umami flavours from glutamate, inosinate, and guanylate found in nori and raw fish, displaying their molecular structures. The right panel discusses allyl isothiocyanate in wasabi and horseradish, along with gingerol and shogaol compounds in pickled ginger (gari). Photos of six different sushi rolls line the bottom.

On October 13 at 1pm ET, @liznorell.bsky.social, @thetattooedprof.bsky.social, @josheyler.bsky.social, and I are convening a webinar about why we believe in AI resistance in higher ed. Registration link in the first comment!
"The AI boom is being sold as inevitable progress, but the real question is not whether artificial intelligence can do useful things in theory. It is who owns it, who profits from it, what it is mostly being used for, and who pays the environmental and political bill when the hype turns into microchip manufacturing plants, data centres, rising power demand, water stress, surveillance and attacks on democratic life." Medhi Leman, "The energy and environmental impact of AI and how it undermines democracy," at Greenpeace.org.

There is no market for your weird dude things. Hot people don’t need pink-haired commies to stop them from coming to your weird dude thing. Hot people have so many options - film studies! food studies! theory! Hell, even spreadsheets and organic chem have their charms.

So, having watched several votes now where classic minerals with strong bases of support went against newcomers and lost (or nearly did) in #MinCup26, may I interest anyone in #TeamVengeance where the goal is simply blood and honor for the fallen against the upstart spoilers with no base but spite?
