Happy Friday! Here's a site I've built because I've been thinking about it & want to see more of it in the world: a space for describing and sharing scholarly skills that I've picked up and nurtured over the years. Also this is a no AI zone in at least two ways: no talking about it and no using it.

We had a great presentation at our lab meeting this week about a coding error that cost a trainee a good bit of time. It was a post-mortem with lots of useful lessons learned, particularly about how reliance on AI agents can sometimes make it harder to find errors. Highly recommended activity!

Nearly 2,000 French high schools are blockaded or closed today amid massive student-led protests over school funding and inequality. The demonstrations began in September at a single school in the eco...

I think a lengthy review process with a possible rejection at the end does more harm than a quick desk reject that clearly states that all authors should have contributed to the paper and read the final version before submission That puts arguments in the ECR's hand as well

Can we all agree that papers where the senior author has not done their due diligence (in terms of meeting a minimum quality standard) are an ethics violation and should be desk rejected?

I wrote this brief talk on why “augmenting diversity” with LLMs is empirically unsubstantiable, conceptually flawed, and epistemically harmful and a nice surprise to see the organisers have made it public synthetic-data-workshop.github.io/papers/13.pdf
title: Cheap science, real harm: the cost of replacing human
participation with synthetic data

author: Abeba Birhane

abstract: Driven by the goals of augmenting diversity, increasing speed, reducing cost, the
use of synthetic data as a replacement for human participants is gaining traction
in AI research and product development. This talk critically examines the claim
that synthetic data can “augment diversity,” arguing that this notion is empirically
unsubstantiated, conceptually flawed, and epistemically harmful. While speed and
cost-efficiency may be achievable, they often come at the expense of rigour, insight,
and robust science. Drawing on research from dataset audits, model evaluations,
Black feminist scholarship, and complexity science, I argue that replacing human
participants with synthetic data risks producing both real-world and epistemic
harms at worst and superficial knowledge and cheap science at best

A revised version of this preprint is now posted on arXiv. The theory section is rewritten, improving model exposition based on feedback we received, we fixed some confusion and errors, contextualized the models more carefully so the interpretation becomes clearer, and improved the overall writing.

In the time of enshittification of, well, everything the role of higher education is not to teach students how to enshittificate more efficiently. It is to provide them with hard skills like source criticism, languages, writing or critical reading that will allow them to survive all of this.

Using this to bring my frequent rant to your feed as well: There are literally thousands of languages and all are their own wonderful universe. Some are signed, some are written, some seem vowelless... And no, AI does not speak all the languages (it technically doesn't even speak one, it parrots)
