The author must have loved writing this line: Hitler had a very poor view of Indian “nationalists. As could be predicted for a Nazi, he did not believe in independence for India or indeed for any colonised peoples” (Kavitha Rao, “Spies, Lies, and Allies: the Extraordinary Lives of Chatto and Roy”)
“Hitler had a very poor view of Indian nationalists. As could be predicted for a Nazi, he did not believe in independence for India or indeed for any colonised peoples. As early as 1925, in Mein Kampf, Hitler had disdainfully called the Indian revolutionaries in Berlin mountebanks…”

On our 310th tour, we intersected with the #NoKings protests. This is us with a sign honoring all the South Asians facing targeting, detentions, and deportations. This includes… 1/4

Happy 🇮🇳🇵🇰 independence days! Aug 1947 meant the liberation of 400 million from colonial rule I found this lovely article about Indian & Pakistani students at UC Berkeley celebrating that moment together. Birth of New Nation Feted By Indian Students at UC The Berkeley Gazette, Aug 18 1947, p11 1/n
An old newspaper article. Full text is in body of post, but the photo is striking:

Three Indian students at the University of California smile and pose together at a celebration marking Indian independence and the creation of Pakistan. On the left, a man wearing a turban and light-colored suit leans toward the others. In the center, a man in a suit and tie wears a Gandhi cap. On the right, a woman in a light dress looks up at them, smiling.

It’s wild that local reporters need to cover debates about local RV parking rules — *and* the threat of the world’s most powerful military coming to invade the city (Source: eastbayinsiders.substack.com/p/trump-thre...)
—OUR COMMS GUY—Oakland political consultant Justin Berton of Berton Media breaks down what President Trump’s threat means to the city and what Mayor Barbara Lee needs to do to fight back.
—Plus, we chat about Oakland’s potential RV encampment policy, and Libby Schaaf’s decision to end her bid for state treasurer.

Opening weekend of our new San Francisco South Asian Radical History Walking Tour was better than we could have imagined. We ran four lovely, emotional sold-out tours over two days, operating on love and adrenaline. People came from as close as the neighborhood, and as far away as Amsterdam.

My dad and I spent the afternoon together at a #NoKings protest, holding a little flag and a hand-me-down “resist” sign, and surrounded by thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds. Moments like this make me feel so grounded. It’ll be hard, but we’re going to get through this.

It’s not surprising that there are a thousand (?) people at the Berkeley #TeslaTakedown protests, including so many old friends. But across the country, deep in the suburbs, people are finding each other and building networks at Tesla dealerships. *That’s* what we’ll need to get through this.

This is the most amazing tweet ever: Dinesh Dsouza desperately trying to prove his racist cred to racists criticizing his son-in-law, a White GOP politician from Texas. Source: x.com/DineshDSouza...
A Dinesh D'Souza tweet, where he says "I’m the Indian in the photo, and I’ve written against multiculturalism and in defense of Western civilization for 30 years. My daughter was born in Virginia, grew up in San Diego and met Brandon at Dartmouth. He is now the youngest GOP congressman and endorsed by Trump."\n\nIt's a response to a racist tweet attacking his White son-in-law for marrying an Indian woman (Dinesh's daughter), with a lovely family photo of Dinesh, his wife, his daughter, and son-in-law.

This is wild. The South Asian Bar Association just showed us what they really value. There are bad takes—and then there’s this.

RIP #DonaldShoup. Here's my favorite Shoupista memory: In 2014, Barnali Ghosh and I got a chance to give Donald Shoup a copy of the Shoupista valentine's day card we designed as part of our Planning Love series (www.planninglove.org). He laughed, and it totally made my week. #ShoupistaForever

This is feeling real now. Just got a refund notice for the #ZakirHussain concert this March.
Text of an email from Cal Performances, saying:

“Dear Anirvan,

You are receiving this email because you currently hold tickets to Zakir Hussain and Masters of Percussion, scheduled for March 21, 2025, at Zellerbach Hall. We are writing today to share the devastating news of Hussain’s sudden passing yesterday, December 15. We grieve deeply the passing of this master who has been a pillar of the Bay Area cultural landscape for decades—a loss which is shared by many. Within the coming weeks, information about refunds and other ticketing options related to the March 21 performance will be shared with you via email, though we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the immediate impact on our Cal Performances community.”

Today, we ran our 292nd/293rd Berkeley South Asian Radical History Walking Tours. Many participants were on work or student visas, some unsure how to engage in post-election movement work. We’ve been working to highlight how non-citizens have shown up in movements, while respecting need for safety
