Why isn't Andy Burnham on Bluesky

Had to evacuate the flat this morning due to a fire in a nearby e-bike retrofitting shop caused by e-bike batteries exploding. Mercifully nobody was harmed but I am wondering what, if anything, is being done to regulate these e-bikes as the batteries do seem to be causing lots of fires?

I wonder, had Peter Mandelson never pestered his contacts in the gov for the US Ambasador post, if Keir Starmer would still be Prime Minister today. I do think that it was that scandal that did him in in the end. And that must hurt him a lot, given that he actually did not like Peter Mandelson.

Honestly this Labour leadership drama is starting to feel like the plot of The Death of Stalin but Stalin isn't dead yet

Latest unenlightened opinion is that we can safely say that Zack Polanski is snatching the celebrity vote from the Labour party. Every week my Instagram has yet another pic of him with a celebrity I vaguely remember voting Labour, and I don't even follow the guy. Does it matter though? Maybe?

Going through a bit of a tough time at the moment, but what pulls me through is this cat giving me head bumps every hour, following me wherever I go, and being extremely open to cuddles.

This episode of Origin Story is excellent, and a much-needed discussion of what 'Blue Labour' actually is. It's also incredibly funny, but that might be because 90% of the Maurice Glasman quotes are comedy fodder, eg: 'Workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your SUPPLY chains'

I was once at peace (as someone who matriculated in October 2015) with the fact that tuition fees were a somewhat fine 'graduate tax'. Those who attempted to persuade me on this were older people who hadn't paid a penny to go to university.

How can you say there is no other "viable proposal" to reduce the backlog in the criminal courts when they haven't even tested whether limiting jury trials work or not. This isn't a zero sum game. Yes there can be better support for victims but that should never come at the expense of a fair trial.

My totally silly political take is Keir Starmer's fortunes would have been reversed by this point if one of his senior advisors had asked him "Since when did having a political opinion become a bad thing?", whilst crunching a biscuit and walking out of the room. One, two, three U-turns, prevented.

The chatbot-ification of UK government communications around the Venezuela crisis is a symptom of a country that has been unable to extrapolate itself from over-dependence on the US. Recent events could not be a better signal that all European countries must band together on defence and security.

I understand political parties need to engage with TikTok/short video kinds of media but honestly the content aimed at Gen Z that mimics TikTok trends on Labour's Instagram these days is just cringeworthy. All of the politicians involved look like they're being forced to do it.

As an employment lawyer I have to say there is a vast difference on the commentary around the Employment Rights Bill on LinkedIn to the commentary on here. On here it's all: "pass the bill now, remove the cap!" On LinkedIn it is: "thank goodness for the House of Lords"

Really rubs me up the wrong way when people go on about Farage's talents. He's a narcissist, a manipulator, and he is dangerous. Why has it become so difficult in recent years to call out politicians who are obviously immoral? "No, Nigel is really talented, he just can't do sums."

If Labour and other parties can't find a way to scrutinise, criticise and condemn a policy like this, they give Reform a free ride and make the future less safe & certain for those who come here, work hard and contribute.

More in Common have produced research on attitudes to deporting people who come in small boats, uninvited, by characteristics. A sixth of people support Farage (and now Conservative) policy in all the cases. A quarter will deport genuine refugees. Most will remove those without a refugee claim

Of course, Labour's comms game is mediocre at the moment and needs shaking up. The whole 'show don't tell' style of politics doesn't work in this day and age. But that doesn't mean there's no hope. I do often despair on Bluesky seeing people speak as though Farage is PM already. He isn't!

On the topic of British children's exposure to the internet ebbing their social confidence, this tendency has bled into people in their twenties like me too. I live in a city where most of my peers live, but I barely see them. I blame it on the internet + being more time poor the older you get.

Perspectives like this make me wonder if anyone in politics has ever heard of the duty of care to future generations before? Sorry, but I couldn't give a monkeys about my energy bill being cheaper in 20 years' time if my great grandchildren have to live through climate breakdown.

Had no idea for years that Caroline Polachek's song 'Breathless' is not an original and is actually a cover of Irish family pop / folk band The Corrs. I don't know how it is possible to make a song so completely your own that the original song sounds more like a cover than the cover.

We now have >250 wards/divisions reported and an increasingly clear picture of the Reform vote. It is higher in areas with fewer graduates, more people with no qualifications, areas where more people are employed in primary industries (e.g. manufacturing) and areas with more older people.

Seeing lots of 'pub or gym' articles going around. I think you can do both? But I also think as you get older your metabolism slows down, your ability to recover from hangovers gets worse, work and family obligations ramp up. As such, I think drinking less the older you get is kind of normal.

In my line of work I've met people who have suffered from life-changing injuries and cannot work. Every single one of them wishes they would be able to work and hates being a burden on their families. To compare people like them to children receiving pocket money is so patronising. Words matter!

Selling my hoover on Facebook Marketplace for £20 is bafflingly difficult. Buyer 1: At collection time goes awol and texts 2 hours later saying 'tunnels' prevent them from getting it. Buyer 2: Day of collection messages me to say their car has been stolen. Buyer 3: "I AM DESPERATE 4 ur hoover".
