Someone else in the thread also made an analogy about being childish, but I don't think that's right either. Children are not naturally cruel, criminal, bigoted, or hell, stupid. Sure, it's insulting to be called "childish" but again, more accurate/damaging to say cruel, bigoted, etc.

This. One of the things that I think is particularly damaging is letting the Taint's of the world co-opt the term as if espousing bigotry and general douchebaggery has anything to do with being masculine. Also minimizes what they are doing – not teaching a form masculinity, just bigotry.

Counterpoint, all of the main series/books stand on their own just fine. That said, if you like Stormlight, you're probably going to like most of Sanderson's stuff, and having knowledge of other books def enhance the experience.
