Sometimes chaplaincy is a contact sport. Healthcare workers face high rates of workplace violence. The bulk of it falls on nurses, CNAs, and other bedside staff and ED staff. Most of my encounters were in the ED. This week I got hit by a cane in a palliative consult. Abrasion+concussion.

I start radiation and chemo in 2 weeks for a small tumor found in my pancreas. I'm already missing part of my small bowel, my entire large intestine, and the lower part of my pancreas. I'm on pancreatic enzymes for the rest of my life. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO EAT TO PEOPLE LIKE THIS???

Discussing my day one methodology for clinical chaplain students with fellow site chaplains took them off guard. It boils down to. If possible I always start with a visit to the hospital morgue or bedside. It's to dispel the biological mystery of death and it's a lesson that we deal with death.
