I started young 👀 I was coding in REXX, COBOL and Assembler then, after ZX Basic and Z80. The best bit of the disks was the price 🤯 We bought 20GB of 3380 (like 3370 but taller), “2nd user” (they were Lloyds Bank’s old disks) for £500,000.

Converted by IBM into smaller data centres. I ran one there 20+ years ago. Wildly thick walls built to withstand a jumbo jet landing on them. No mobile signal. At all.

#SAFC preseason ends with a 2-1 comfortable victory over fellow Europa league team Stade Rennais. Good goals by Brobbey and Hume, with next to nothing for Roefs to do all game. Fairly even 1st half, and a much more dominant 2nd as we stepped up the urgency to come back from 1-0 down. #HAWAY!

They say we are about to have our 4th heat wave of the summer in London. It’s been high 20’s or low 30’s every day. Every day for weeks. A cold day is 23-24C. 😳 It rained today for 15 minutes for the first time since I can remember. No rain. In the UK. 🤯

A story about the 21st birthday gift I got my eldest daughter (in the alt text).

I took my eldest daughter fossil hunting on the north east Scottish coast when she was 9 and we found a few good ones.

I’d kept them in a box in the garage all these years and fished them out last month and took a hammer to the rocks to see if there were any good samples

There were some great ones and I got one of the ammonite fossils she found mounted in silver by a local jeweller Sparkle By Faith and gave it her as a 21st birthday gift.

She’s very boho chic so the design and style of it fits very well with her aesthetic.

I found a rather interesting problem encrypting a 64T bigfile a couple of years ago. If you’re on exadata and encrypt it online, cell offload got disabled for the duration of the encryption. Fine if you’re doing a lot of little 32G files… Fixed in 19.24, and speeded up from 10 days to 3!
