Britain’s jobs market continues to weaken. UK payroll employment fell by around 26,000 in August, vacancies dropped to 702,000 and private-sector wage growth slowed to just 2.9%. Unemployment remains at 4.9%, but despite stronger recent GDP figures, businesses still appear reluctant to hire.

July’s stronger-than-expected growth appears to have been driven heavily by services, particularly tech, computer programming, & AI-related activity. Another reminder that if the UK wants faster growth, the digital economy, & technology investment are going to have to do a lot of the heavy lifting.
