When home heating is less affordable, more people die each winter. That's what our analysis found for a period when LIHEAP was in place. Without LIHEAP, the effect would presumably much larger. Ungated copy of the study here: bit.ly/2JrJfxR

We've seen this year how SEPTA's fate hinges on a few votes in the PA assembly. Rapid growth in SEPA before the next redistricting could be the difference between a subway expansion and a death spiral!

Philadelphia has a rate of traffic deaths 3x higher than New York City. source: visionzerophl.com/wp-content/u...
In 2020, fatal crashes in Philadelphia spiked. Before
the pandemic, around 90 traffic deaths occurred each
year. In 2020, there were 155. Traffic deaths fell in 2021,
but not to pre-pandemic trends. In 2023, that trend
continued with 123 fatalities. Other cities around the
country experienced a similar increase in fatal crashes.
However, Philadelphia’s per-capita rate of traffic deaths
remains much higher than peer cities like New York and
BostonChart Title: Annual Traffic Deaths per 100,000 Residents

This chart shows the number of traffic deaths per 100,000 residents in six major U.S. cities. The cities are listed vertically, with the number of deaths per 100,000 residents shown to the right of each city name. The numbers are represented by horizontal bars, with the length of each bar proportional to the number of deaths.

Data:

Philadelphia: 8.03 deaths per 100,000 residents (yellow bar)
New York City: 2.72 deaths per 100,000 residents (black bar)
Boston: 5.78 deaths per 100,000 residents (black bar)
Washington D.C.: 6.3 deaths per 100,000 residents (black bar)
Chicago: 6.63 deaths per 100,000 residents (black bar)
Los Angeles: 7.82 deaths per 100,000 residents (black bar)
Additional Information:

The bars are arranged in descending order of traffic deaths, with Philadelphia having the highest rate and New York City having the lowest.
The chart does not include data for all U.S. cities.
It is important to note that this data represents traffic deaths per 100,000 residents, not the total number of traffic deaths.

Folks in Philly: if you care about making sure SEPTA continues to function (which you should) give Governor Shapiro's office a call or email. Philly is an old city built before the car. If SEPTA faces double digit budget cuts it may enter a doom loop, along with Philly itself.
