Okay, so after hours of filling in the holes, I *think* I'm safe. Now I just need to edit all the new sections. This is one of the worst parts of writing, IMO. Reminiscent of having to unpick stitches when sewing a garment goes awry. I look forward to being done with this part. Again.

It’s driving me insane. Every hole I fix opens up loads more. I’m glad I’m catching them and not a reader, but sometimes SF makes it hard to write the drama you need. That age old problem with writing in a world where a lot of stuff can be fixed by tech.

So, today I set about fixing 'one small plot-hole' I'd discovered in a section of my book I've spent a week editing. Turns out, that one small plot-hole is in fact ten, and the section is more sieve than plot at this point. I am so done with today, and it's not even lunch yet.

Glad it went well. I once had an emergency root canal while on holiday, and it was the best feeling ever, as I'd been in agony for three days (to the point of being unable to sleep), and when that anaesthetic went in, I had never felt so much relief.

Had the whole house to myself for 24 hours with the kids at the grandparents and my husband at a festival. The place is tidy, I got three chapters edited, and I slept uninterrupted for 8+ hours for the first time in years. I still desperately want them home, but I'm not going to lie, this was nice.

😂 I mean, I do think it helps improve my writing, especially dialogue, but there have been many times where there are people in the house, and I don't know they're within earshot (like kids' friends, my husband's students etc.) until after it's too late.

I was editing a fraught scene the other day between my MC and her LI, and I'm bouncing between her American accent and his deep British one. I was on the edge of my seat in the moment when my 8-year-old, having snuck in silently, burst out from behind my chair laughing her arse off at me. Not fun.

I have this weird quirk where I read aloud as I write, especially with dialogue. All my characters have distinctive voices, accents, cadences etc. I actually think it helps capture distinct voices on the page, but it is ever so slightly mortifying when people overhear me.

Littlest just asked why I stay up so late after they've gone to bed, and I was explaining it's my favourite time of the day, when all is calm and I can write. Cue Middle chipping in with, "not hanging out with your beloved children or watching us grow up, you reclusive bat" 😂 Never been prouder.

Totally. I think it's maybe subconscious on the whole, because I can't think of anything that's terribly different. I think I feel the same, and it's generally just chaos around here with kids off school. It's crazy how different those three chapters felt, though. I'm going to try to ride this out!

The mysteries of editing mindset. Spent a week editing one chapter, then edited three in one day yesterday. And when I read them all back, I can't understand why the first one took so long and the others raced along. There's no substantial difference in tone or content. Anyone else experience this?

London's been dry for weeks. The grass is yellow, the plants sad, and everything is covered in dust. Today, it rained for 1 minute, and the instant smell of petrichor was so overwhelming, my kids came running into the garden to enjoy it. Never smelled it so strongly. Glorious. Now come back rain!

I've been on Tidal for a while. Left Spotify over their AI policies/awful practice (and the fact the CEO of Spotify has invested millions in AI weaponry). My musician husband loves Tidal. He says it's the best quality by far and they enumerate artists far fairer than other streaming platforms.

Oh, it'll take years 😂 Solar panels took almost a full year. This will be a bigger fight. But it'll be worth it. And we get through it mostly by complaining 😂 and sitting in front of fans that just move the hot sticky air around—and by remembering the rest of the time, our climate is pretty ideal.

Oh no, hope you're okay! Finally back below 30 here, and it's nice to not melt simply by existing. We've finally decided to take the plunge and get wall-mounted AC, but it's going to be a long fight with our council to get it because this is a listed home. Getting solar panels was war. This? 😬
