I don’t buy this “trump voters don’t know what they voted for and will be upset when they find out” stuff. They know. They like it. And when it makes their life worse they’ll blame another scapegoat I do understand the need to pretend that such a large number of one’s compatriots aren’t evil

Cook 3 shallots and 2 serranos until soft then put in curry paste ginger and lemongrass and let that sweat a few minutes before dumping in stock and fish sauce and letting that simmer for an hour before adding lime juice, coconut milk mushrooms and a protein of your choice and call me in the morning

I think if you’re a young person (or an older person frankly) considering some kind of creative project, the state of the world is more or less “fuck it we ball” like, you might as well

I like dogs better than people, so I’m biased, but people who hurt dogs should have their eyes gouged out of their skull. I’ll forgive MV the instant that happens Another data point for why it’s good that I’m not in charge

Americans keep being surprised by this but it is a pretty standard combination of beliefs among European radical right politicians, there's even a whole literature on "welfare chauvinism", a term coined to explain the appeal of the radical right in Nordic countries

Nobody - not one person - is offering a vision of the world where vigilantes are free to kill people they believe are doing harm. On the other hand, the reality of our world is that people like Brian Thompson are free to kill innocent people for the crime of being poor.

But Gravity is by far the more intellectually challenging film. Why doesn’t anyone talk about the ending of Gravity? Did I see an alternative ending version or something? It’s a wild ending and I didn’t fully understand what was going on until then!

Like, yes, Interstellar looks pretty good. I also think part of its success in general is due to Nolan’s desire/ability to flatter his audience’s vanity wrt to intelligence. He’s always doing a (not always successful!) “aren’t you smart for understanding this movie!”

Cercopithy @cercopithy.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
tl;dr Interstellar is about spaceflight. Gravity is about biology. (Not biology so much in the field of study sense, but more as an exploration of what it means to be a being that knows about both ontogeny and phylogeny)
000
Cercopithy @cercopithy.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
I think a big part of the reason no one understood Gravity is because it unfortunately came out around the same time as Interstellar, and so people incorrectly thought it was about space. The other reason is that people are, to a large extent, philistines.

The idea of “social murder” is super useful, and we need to get comfortable using it. Engels is the best, man - reading him feels like finally acknowledging the obvious reality everyone wants you to ignore
Engels on 'Social Murder'
When one individual inflicts bodily injury upon another, such injury that death results, we call that deed manslaughter; when the assailant knew in advance that the injury would be fatal, we call this deed murder.
But when society places hundreds of proletarians in such a position that they inevitably meet a too early and an unnatural death, one which is quite as much a death by violence as that by the sword or the bullet; when it deprives thousands of the necessaries of life, places them under conditions in which they cannot live - forces them ... to remain in such conditions until that death ensues which is the inevitable consequence - knows that these thousands of victims must perish, and yet permits these conditions to remain, its deed is murder just as surely as the deed of the single individual ...

The ‘depose’ could mean both senses of the word. This doesn’t clear up the motive. Could be revenge, could be he was turning state’s evidence
