There's an OMB rule change that would require political oversight of scientific grants, and could pull any that don't "reflect presidential priorities" Another country has tried this before! It was the USSR and it was called Lysenkoism. By @thsaey.bsky.social www.sciencenews.org/article/omb-...

Here’s what happens when you put politicians in charge of science
Proposed federal rules would rely on political appointees to decide how a lot of U.S. science gets done. History shows the consequences of such actions.

If you have already completed this survey since September 2025, thank you! There's no need to fill it out again right now--but please do consider doing so again next year, since it's helpful for us to obtain longitudinal data!. :)

Have you ever discussed the prediction of EN effect boundaries? For example, I cover the central coast (south of SF) and we usually see the N-S EN boundary in this region but it varies. I’ve had clientele ask me where the line might be this year and I have no good answer!

Okay, folks: The big El Niño update is now out on Weather West! This sure looks like it's going to be a dramatic year from a global climate perspective, and there are major implications for extreme events (across California, the U.S. West, & well beyond).

June 11, 2026 - Daniel Swain - A quick refresher: What is El Niño and how can it affect global weather patterns? El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a semi-regular recurring cycle that transfers vast amounts of heat and momentum from the tropical Pacific to the global atmosphere. A place that needs work for sure… I haven’t connected with them directly but am trying to get more work done on the Monterey Peninsula. Monterey County does have some unique challenges related to codes that sometimes conflict with best fire resilience practices. It’s on my list!

Fire season is pretty much here. If you haven’t already, do the yard work. Clear flammable material away from your house. Make sure the roof is clear. Do it for you and your family. Do it so your house isn’t the one that burns your neighborhood down.

If fed and state agencies could get out of their way and set up a system that allows qualified volunteers from PBAs (who generally don’t have an agency to sponsor a red card) to provide assistance when resources are low, it could make a difference in making more burns happen.

I say this every time someone talks about new detection tech. We don’t need better detection- we need consistent funding for more resilient communities. We also need to stop basing new requirements on dynamic criteria like hazard level.

Additional information on this particular water system (which I used for 17+ years)… This happens frequently, with or without power loss-a lot of rural homes with livestock and residents who put hoses in places they shouldn’t. Gravity takes priority and there are no individual prevention measures.

Just a reminder that the heat wave affecting the central coast right now is making a lot of fuels available to burn that weren’t just a week ago… Take care when working with potential ignition sources (camp fires, welding, mowing, heavy equipment, etc.) #fireprevention

Heads up that fuels that haven’t been “available” to burn in recent months WILL become available soon. This means things like fireworks or campfires that aren’t completely out are high risk, even in March! #wildfiredanger

If it continues to burn surface fuels, this is currently #goodfire. Not knowing the area, I’d be curious to know what natural containment barriers exist and what the spot weather forecast is… If weather and ground conditions align there’s potential for more good fire.
