Yana Valachovic played such an important role in this process. The result is a compromise. Some of us (myself included) wanted a stronger role. Many wanted no rule at all. Yana found a way to get to yes. We are so fortunate to have had her serving CA through this long and winding road.

Last Saturday, UC ANR Fire Network team members presented to 4-Her’s from across California at 4-H’s State Leadership Conference at UC Davis. Together we talked about fire science basics, home hardening and defensible space, and did some fun activities! 🔥🍀 #4hslc2026
Two adults present slides on a projector screen to rows of children seated in a classroom.
Small boards with matches and cotton arranged on them sit on a metal tray. There is also a spray bottle and metal screw on the tray.
A sign taped to a whiteboard that reads "What do you think of when you hear the word fire?" accompanied by colorful post-its stuck on the board next to the sign.
A group of children present a poster to a room of children and an adult that is facilitating.

Smoke exposure from wildfires is an increasingly common public health hazard to communities throughout California. One important thing that you can do to keep yourself and your family safe during wildfire season is to check the Air Quality Index (AQI) and take action accordingly.
