Greetings from Bergen, Norway! Is there a word (maybe in German or Arabic or Farsi?) for when your eyes have been starved of green? After six weeks of drought I am drinking in the lush verdant mountains and fjords. And would love to spend a weekend in a bothy only accessible by rugged hike.

#TubulinTuesday Reposting an old favourite - breast cancer cell grown in a low dose of taxes for a long time. It's swirling peripheral actin is winding microtubules like yarn on a spindle, pulling its DNA along into the maelstrom.
A huge cell with a ring of yellow microtubules and purple actin around the edge. In amongst the ri g are small circles of blue DNA. The center has a large irregular blob of blue DNA and a clear area where there are a few wiggle microtubules going from the center to the outer ring. Close up of a section of the huge cell, with a ring of parallel yellow microtubules with embedded cyan DNA spots in it. The misshapen cyan nucleus is in the bottom. A long yellow thread connects the nucleus to the other ring, and there is a blob of DNA at the point where they meet, also training a long thread back to the nuclear DNA.

Where are the calls for white British BBC presenters to condemn acts of violence committed by their ethnic or racial group? What a thing to say.
Geissler then concluded the exchange by saying “that is your opinion”.

“I asked for your opinion, you've made it absolutely crystal clear. In the interest of balance, I should say there are other political parties out there who would argue that a lot of these people were out there last night just articulating what they would think are legitimate views that are opposed to yours,” he added.

“But listen, let's move on.”

Does anyone else have or know about flint glass eye baths? I have this little guy, at one time 25 cents from Schiller's Pharmacy in Pittsburgh. Can be repeatedly sterilized because it is flint glass. Fill it with water if you have something in your eye - just hold it over your eye socket and blink.

What this office is doing is taking the parts of the federal government that touch you directly, your prescription, your voter registration, your passport, your federal login, out of the agencies that legally own them and rebuilding them on White House infrastructure. Vote.gov belongs to the Election Assistance Commission, and the studio built a copy. Passports belong to the State Department, and the studio is building a replacement this week. Login.gov belonged to GSA, and the studio’s guy runs it now.

This is horrifying. Do read.
While I was finishing this piece, I typed passports.gov directly into my browser, just to see what was there. A sign-in page came up: enter your email and we will send you a six-digit code. No State Department seal. No agency name. No privacy notice. Just a black button that says Send code. The owner of passports.gov is the Executive Office of the President, White House Office. The State Department does not own this domain. The security contact field is blank. The first certificate was issued May 5, three weeks ago. Based on what I can see in the staging environment, the next step will ask Americans to upload their passport photo through a White House-controlled website, on the same Cloudflare account, by the same people, with no privacy notice on file. A passport photo is biometric quality. Linked to your identity through Login.gov. Collected through infrastructure the White House owns, sealed from public view. They are building it this week.

Palantir CEO Alex Karp thinks his AI technology will lessen the power of “highly educated, often female voters, who vote mostly Democrat” while increasing the power of working-class men.

“This technology disrupts humanities-trained—largely Democratic—voters, and makes their economic power less. And increases the economic power of vocationally trained, working-class, often male, working-class voters,” Karp said in a CNBC interview Thursday. “And so these disruptions are gonna disrupt every aspect of our society. And to make this work, we have to come to an agreement of what it is we’re going to do with the technology; how are we gonna explain to people who are likely gonna have less good, and less interesting jobs.”

Yes! We do not have to accept the terms of bad faith arguments. It's not an ad hominem attack to address the meta text of the argument.
Here are some examples from my running thread.

Frame: DOGE was a govt efficiency project to save money
Negation: Actually it made things less efficient and cost money
Kirby: DOGE WAS A PROJECT TO BREAK AND PRIVATIZE FEDERAL BUREAUCRACY
Frame: This public service costs too much, it isn’t making money
Negation: It’s actually very efficient and it could make more money
Kirby: THEY ARE ATTACKING THE VERY IDEA OF PUBLIC SERVICES
Frame: Des Moines Superintendent Dr. Ian Roberts is here illegally
Negation: actually his paperwork is in order
Kirby: THIS IS A RACIST ATTACK BY FASCISTS because a Black man is leading a school district. The better he’s doing the more they hate him
Frame: ICE is targeting criminals
Negation: No, they’re targeting ordinary people!
Kirby: THEY’RE WHITE SUPREMACISTS DOING ETHNIC CLEANSING which is why they’re saying everybody who isn’t white is a criminal

WTAF is wrong with people? Wealth hoarding and denial; it's a sickness.
I wonder whether the full assessment might also have named some other pressing security threats. One is the way in which fossil fuel, meat and livestock producers have been funding far-right movements, to stifle environmental protection measures that would reduce their profits. Such funding is a major driver of the fascistic politics that we now witness in the US.

It’s not hard to see how inconvenient this report is for Starmer’s government, which has repeatedly sought to invent a conflict between prosperity and environmental protection. Its war on the living world (a world it reduces, according to the “cauldron principle”, to bats, newts, spiders and snails) is a major element of its appeal to the “hero voters” on which it believes its success depends. Never mind that these voters might not actually exist: we’ll bring our ghost army back from Reform UK by attacking wildlife, which everyone in Britain famously hates. That’s bound to work. So when the security services say that environmental protection is in fact essential to prosperity, their report must be suppressed.

Labour should worry more about winning the young people who back the Greens (for good reason!) than courting the mythical Labour-->Reform voter who won't vote for them anyway. And, y'know, DO SOMETHING about climate catastrophe.
It echoes warnings some of us have made for years, only to be dismissed as nutters, doomsayers and extremists. It tells us that “ecosystem degradation is occurring across all regions. Every critical ecosystem is on a pathway to collapse (irreversible loss of function beyond repair).” This presents a threat to “UK national security and prosperity”. It says “the world is already experiencing impacts including crop failures, intensified natural disasters and infectious disease outbreaks. Threats will increase with degradation and intensify with collapse.” The results will include geopolitical and economic instability, increased conflict and competition for resources. “It is unlikely the UK would be able to maintain food security if ecosystem collapse drives geopolitical competition for food.” It also warns that “conflict and military escalation will become more likely, both within and between states, as groups compete for arable land and food and water resources”.
