This is so, so well-articulated.

People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

At the end of our game "The Wounds Once Made", he was punished by Lolth with the most dreadful of curses for a drow, to be turned into a Drider. Naj'all is a tall drow elf man, with long disheveled white hair, red eyes with black scleras and an ugly scar on his face. His jaw splits into two separate parts. His torso is attached to the bodyof a black-purplish spider with 8 spiky legs. In the top left of the image a portrait of his face, scowling at the viewer with an impassive expression. In the top right there are two Sava pieces he himself cut from onix stones. The Mother has toppled the Warrior. In the corner, a broken brooch from his former house from Menzoberranzan, Barrison Del'Armgo.

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things. Here’s a blurb on what I mean:

Some thoughts:
When using GenAi as a mood board you don't get sources. This means you deprive yourself from knowledge.
You generated a location? You deprived yourself of knowing more about the interesting parts of the world and why things came to be.
Generate an armor or costume? You deprived yourself on real world techniques, function, form and history.
You generated art inspirations? You deprive yourself of learning about artists from history or lock out living ones from potentially being hired.
Ethical issues of using GenAi models aside, one ends up making visuals mood boards devoid of reality and history. With it one deprives themselves from learning about our world and who is living in it, inadvertently making your work weaker, because of how detached it is from our shared human reality and history.
