Never forget this: The forces rigging our economy, undermining our democracy, polluting our planet, and stoking hatred are counting on you to give up. Cynicism is how they win. Stay clear-eyed and ready for the fight ahead.

Because Unitarian Universalists are so dangerous, lol. Better be careful - they might sing Blue Boat Home at you and feed you soup. (I mean, they definitely will.) A real criminal enterprise. www.uuworld.org/articles/min...

Where did I say it was unrealistic? In fact I said it was essential. Social media is all about “chiming in” and, ideally, trying to understand each other and work out solutions. Attacking people who honestly share their experiences doesn’t help.

Yes. “Policy” maybe too broad a word here.

ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
It’s not policy for NHS to have massive waiting lists. It’s just a very overtaxed system.
100
ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Obviously, yes. So how can the US build a universal healthcare system that won’t be hostage to a hostile government? Maybe a system that has additional sources of support.
100
ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Understood that, yes.
000
ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
I’m not arguing for that. I’m saying an ideal system wd incorporate preventative care, not only symptom-responsive. And, to my mind, an ideal system wouldn’t be wholly reliant on govt support but instead include (regulated & enforced) money so a hostile government isn’t able to kill it (see Tories).

ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Long waiting lists are going to be a standard feature of every system as we all age. Brits are very good a queuing up :)
010
ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Yes! First, I’m sorry that you have to defer care. I have been there and it’s scary and wrong. Second, it seems like there must be a way to tap the political force for a system that can actually work for everyone. The zero sum game in America will kill us all ultimately.
020
ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Yes, of course. I’m not remotely arguing for be American system. Other European systems have universal care that also integrate small co-pays and other sources of income.

I’m so sorry. That is deeply wrong.

Obvs shopping internationally for medical care is a rare privilege. America has amazing healthcare practitioners and high standards but all of it seems stuck in the stranglehold of an rapaciously out-of-control insurance industry. 2/2

ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
I have a few friends in the UK who have gone back to their European parents’ homes for treatment. That said, nowhere is perfect. An Indian-American woman I was just talking with said testing is much cheaper and easier to access in Delhi so she does her blood tests and scans while there. 1/2

ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Yes, absolutely. I’m just thinking theoretically about how America might build a system that was universal, effective, and aligned incentives of many patients, practitioners, small businesses, education, big businesses that are ethical, etc.
130
ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
But it’s not perfect. If you suffer from something that NICE hasn’t approved (eg, MCAS as a cause for GI issues), you may be gaslit and/or turned away. If you have something unusual (eg, hEDS), you’re just out of luck. It’s incredibly frustrating. 2/2

ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
I’ve been in UK since 2007. NHS care has declined every year since then. That’s why I think healthcare can’t solely be government supported.

ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
To my mind, a mix of public & private is necessary. That means an entrenched hostile government can’t starve the health system to the point of dysfunction & near collapse. Having a universal health safety net for all is also essential. America’s “devil take the hindmost” approach can’t continue. 2/2

ceaman.bsky.social @ceaman.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
As an American living in UK and using the NHS, I’d caution you that nationalised health (at least in UK) does not include regular check ups. Waiting lists can be years long for appointments with specialists; things like CT scans that Americans with insurance take for granted as much less common. 1/2
