📢 New paper out in Scientific Reports! We found links b/t brain activity & emotional outcomes in women with chronic postsurgical pain. 🧠 More SMC activation → more anxiety/depression 🧠 More PFC activation → lower chronic stress (via hair cortisol) No moderation by pain intensity. bit.ly/3ZichEA

Today, I had the honor of participating in this amazing panel to talk about organ donation, particularly those barriers that affect the Hispanic community. It was a privilege to listen to my co-panelists share their stories about their journeys with organ donation

This is very important! We don’t want to minimize the pain experience & also want to properly prepare kids (& adults) for things like injections. I am a #chronicpain researcher & a lot of untreated #pain in kids can lead to chronic pain in adults.

The abrupt end of USAID-funded clinical trials is profoundly unethical
USAID's stop-work order threatens to undo decades of progress in medical research ethics and cause harm to clinical trial participants.

I did have to give birth in May 2020 though so I’m lucky the stress of the pandemic & @hecmagsmd.bsky.social working w/ COVID patients didn’t result in high BP/ adverse outcomes!

My Ob was a bit surprised by the MFM rec given that I didn’t have preeclampsia w/my 1st only a few years earlier. My Ob said that was a better predictor of preeclampsia than age; however the aspirin at age 40 & older was the guideline so I should just take it. I did & all was well.

This is interesting. When I was pregnant with my 2nd since I was going to turn 40 2 weeks prior to my due date, MFM had me follow the “40 yr old” protocol, which was to take baby aspirin daily I think around 27 weeks but I can’t exactly recall when it was started.

External studies have shown: -NIH funding directly or indirectly supported the development of ALL new treatments that were FDA approved between 2010-2020 -the return on NIH investment is estimated at 25-40% annually given the improvement in productivity from a healthier workforce Facts matter.

I do however have to fund postdocs who are often immigrants who left everything to get a visa to work with me for not great money (certainly not considering cost of living in Boston) & who I fear will be greatly impacted by what is going on.

So for someone like me, at an academic medical center, I don’t have grad students who pay tuition. I mentor undergrad & grad students who work with me from other universities (even several from the UK) who receive credit for working with me but there is no exchange of tuition.

Further, I don’t think an AMC would be entitled to that money as it is a hospital affiliate not directly part of the university.

I also think endowments are complicated for reasons I don’t fully understand; however, I don’t think a medical school or school of public health have as high of endowments as the main university.

Thanks for your question! I’m not an expert & expect we will hear about options in the coming days. I work at an academic medical center (AMC) that is affiliated with a medical school but is not part of tuition.

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.
