@yesatops.bsky.social do you remember watching Spice World at the drive-in the summer after it came out? I would bet you were there but memory is fuzzy. I recall it as a double-feature with Godzilla '98 but that could be confabulation idk.

I am not unbiased, but this is truly an episode for the ages. I'm shocked they managed to avoid throttling each other (and that's just the first 15 minutes)

sometimes I think about the amount of critical theory that’s going to be required to even attempt to make sense of what the fuck has been happening over the last six years and I need to go lie down

Burgess's research lends another dimension to @aurspiers.bsky.social's new book Archiving the Past (2026), which looks at women's labor in the historiographic spaces of cinema history in France. (My full review of this great book is coming soon; I just saw proofs this week!)

Another work to add to the growing & welcome list of scholarship on women's labor in cinema production & archival circles! This one is a video essay by @zoevb.bsky.social & the archival footage alone is well worth the 12-minute screen time 🎥https://intransition.openlibhums.org/article/id/24890/

Interesting to note which vectors of $$$ transfer are assumed to convey prestige. To wit: I doubt any of these journals started paying their peer reviewers.

The profit-prestige connection in academic publication & assessment must be shattered.
Saray Córdoba, a retired information scientist at the University of Costa Rica in San José, suspects that some journals might have shifted away from the model "not because diamond open access is financially unsustainable", but because they think that the more commercial models "will bring them more prestige."

The provost of UMass (R1) literally told a group of historians this: “research” means pulling in large external grants and unless you do that, you don’t matter and get nothing internally. “Research“ is about $ and institutions support only those disciplines that bring in $ or raise it privately.

Salt and Fire (2016) was a fiction feature also directed by Werner Herzog, seemingly produced alongside Into the Inferno, and it was even worse (though Michael Shannon manages to chew some scenery with far more glee than the film deserves)

This makes me want to return to my volcano project from a few years ago, which was (is?) much more broadly about gender and volcanic imagery on screen. fwiw I really didn't like Herzog's Into the Inferno (2016), an earlier work than his Krafft doc mentioned here, which I haven't yet seen.
