FINALWRECK is not one of the worst blockbusters of the last ten years, but, gee, is that incoherent, ineffectual opening hour dispiriting.

The new White Lotus season feels like a step backward after the more effervescent season two, but I'm enjoying the heck out of what Parker Posey is bringing to the table

So many of you who have well-formed, insightful taste have me second-guessing myself on this, but, outside of its last ten or fifteen minutes, I really didn't like ANORA all that much. It being both a Palme d'Or winner and a Best Picture winner is a real head-scratcher for me!

CONCLAVE is sturdy "airport novel" cinema. That's a film genre we could use more of, not less of, if only because this sort of middlebrow story should be told in a couple of mildly entertaining hours rather than dragged out into twelve-episode streaming fluff.

I like how CITIZEN SLEEPER 2 expands on the gameplay and world of the first, but it loses a bit of the narrative punch of its predecessor. It feels almost incomplete. I don't know if there's a DLC planned, but I could see that pulling things together.

NOSFERATU (2024) Inert. Too pleased with too little. Eggers really likes smash cuts to black.

I don't really "buy" THE BRUTALIST, but it has its moments I'm happy that this kind of big epic folly can still be made today

I don't "get" Harry Potter Who wants to imagine themselves in a dreary fantasy universe that has not one single good outfit in it And what do you get to perform all your acts of magical wonder? Not a sword or staff or anything cool, but a sad little twig that occasionally shoots sparks

I revisited I AM LOVE yesterday. Dramatically and narratively speaking, it's a mess, but it turns out that doesn't matter all that much when you have the best cinematography of the 2000s plus a soundtrack assembled from John Adams masterpieces

I'm seeing people be protective of ANDOR in a "It's the only good thing to come out of Disney Wars" way But spending over $600 million on two seasons of a TV show, no matter how good, is emblematic of the cost disease that has to corroded the industry and brought it to the point of total collapse

Nolan applying his austere brand of spectacle to THE ODYSSEY could be pretty satisfying For example, consider applying the INTERSTELLAR "water planet" ticking clock vibes to the Sirens episode

The first chapter of QUEER is the best film Guadagnino has made. I'm less certain about the rest of it.

Ryan (Caves of Altamira) @cavesofaltamira.bsky.social · 11/12/2024

I have the opportunity to see either QUEER or CONCLAVE this weekend Strongly leaning towards the former, but anyone want to make a case for the latter?

I know not everyone digs COVENANT the way I do, but, come on, Fassbender playing a flute with a clone of himself in a grandly Gothic sci-fi city of the dead is infinitely more interesting than anything in ROMULUS

It wasn't the only factor by any means, but I do believe the most significant reason I stopped writing about movies (circa 2018) is that I just didn't enjoy how new movies were looking/sounding That hasn't really changed
