"Here's a weird stubby island where a wall used to be" is aesthetically offensive, and it boggles the mind that people would pay MORE for this kind of renovation

I choose to believe that Obama was the one who made the call to include the "here's my dog getting headpats from the pope" photo in the dog memorial post
Post on Obama's instagram memorializing Sunny the dog. The second photo in the carousel features Sunny sitting on the floor in the Oval Office getting headpats from pope Francis, and also both Obamas. There's a handler holding her leash to the left of the frame. Every single person in the photo is focused on the dog.

Part of adulthood is paying for yourself! This is not generational brokeness, it's entitlement
"I definitely do want to get married and have kids,” said Grace Sakellariou, 27, who is single and was born in Queens. “But that just feels so unattainable. I can’t even think about affording a wedding.”

Ms. Sakellariou and her twin sister, who live together in Astoria, have noticed that more men seem to be asking to split the bill — even on second or third dates. “It’s discouraging,” she said. “I think it’s stunted our growth that everything’s so expensive.”

Influencers are a scourge, exhibit 3736525252 (also I feel like this is an issue with the way the article is scoped - a 25 year old and a 35 year old both count as "young" but are going to have very different perspectives)
New York would seem like an ideal sandbox for cheap plans — with dozens of free museums, hundreds of green spaces and heaps of low-cost events every weekend that are just a $3 fare away on the 24-hour subway. And lately, some young people have begun opting for park picnics over pricey experiences.

But in interviews, others described feeling full-force pressure from social media in a city that is home to many young professionals with six-figure salaries. TikTok influencers debate whether coffee dates signal low effort. On Instagram, a male creator recently warned his 1.3 million followers that no man with a net worth under $100,000 should be allowed to date.

First, thank you for confirming that I am officially an Old. Second, if you're taking your date to a 3 hour movie and it's not a rep screening of Margaret, that's a skill issue (rep screenings cost less than the chains, just saying!)
More than half of unmarried young adults — ages 22 to 35 — say not having enough money is their biggest barrier to dating, according to a national research project from Brigham Young University’s Wheatley Institute and the Institute for Family Studies.

That pressure can feel especially acute in New York. When you can barely afford your rent and energy bills, $130 dinner dates, $20 cocktails or $28 tickets to see “The Odyssey” quickly add up.

This article is in fact grimmer than the obscure midcentury sad novels that I adore
And there are plenty of readers ready to open the app and post their opinions, feelings, and perspectives on the books that have “ruined” them or made them weep. Personal testimony is paramount on BookTok; a book is deemed successful if it “breaks” or “destroys” a reader. The most common book-review content on the app understands books as pleasure-spiking torment factories, arenas for an almost masochistic level of personal involvement. This means users film themselves literally crying and holding a tear-stained page up to the camera, captioning the post with a quip like “brb gonna cry more” or “I just feel too much 😭.”

Now I have a quantifiable metric to point to when my friends tell me they've never heard of any of the books I post www.newyorker.com/culture/infi...
Novels are, of course, alive in the sense that they are still being written and published, but the data for their long-term vitality is discouraging. In 2024, literary fiction was reported to comprise only two per cent of the total fiction market, with even the best-performing titles rarely making an annual best-selling top-ten list.

Too busy trying to be cutesy with the prompt to catch the typos (I also wonder how a platform that does not give users control of their media consumption history construes "my taste")
Make a playlist that captures the full breakup evolution: from soft heartbreak to full-blown rebirth. I want songs for deleting texts, hyping yourself up in the mirror, and fake-it-till-you-make-it confidence. Songs based on my taste that radiate confidence and chaos in equal measure. It should start with the emotional aftermath: the 2 a.m. overthinking phase, then build into loud, glittery freedom. Think loud singalongs in the mirror, impulsive haircuts, and walking like the main character after heartbreak. It should start with the sad feels, and end in full liberation mode. Do not include more than one song by the same artist
