I think a thing we'll learn tonight is that people fucking hate what is going on and they will straight ticket vote against anyone involved in starving people while pillaging the country and kidnapping their neighbors. I don't think it matters at all who that person is.

I hope this moment also motivates each of us to build stronger support networks with our neighbors, especially those who will be most harmed by this bill. That kind of community organizing and mutual aid will really sustain us for the long haul

I’m grateful we have your voice!! Your perspectives resonate so much with my own, but I’ve always felt alone because no one else around me seems to think similarly. Knowing others like you are out there has given me a lot of courage to confidently take action in my own daily life 🫶

Made a quick general purpose flyer on the Big Beautiful Bill with a call-to-action based on info from 5calls.org, if anyone wants to print and post around their neighborhood! Here's the Canva link as well, anyone is welcome to make a copy and edit www.canva.com/design/DAGoL...

A few thoughts about today's protests: 1) The April 5 Hands Off day of action clearly ranks as one of the very largest mobilizations in U.S. history, by two different measures: -- total national turnout (~ 3 million) -- number of local protests (~ 1400)

From inside the DoD: “Schumer's bungling over the past two months & creation of this lose-lose scenario is a complete dereliction of his duties. This was the sole moment where they had any real potential leverage to stand up and fight for the Constitution & they completely blew it from day 1.”

A square piece of artwork with a black background. There are slim almond shaped pieces of cut paper that are collaged onto the black background in a circle that radiates outwards from the center. The almond shapes are varying shades of pinks, oranges and reds. In the center is the word fury in an old English type. Art is by Martha Rich.

For ex, as a thought experiment—what would it take for me, who trusts in science & social justice, to fully reject the words of my own respected leaders and thinkers? Viscerally I feel: nothing could. Maybe this is similar to how these “others” feel? I hope to maintain empathy by remembering that.

I’ve been struggling to convince people (without seeming like I’m “enabling”) that other people also have coherent worldviews, just as they do. It’s easy to dismiss them as immoral or deserving, but there are reasons their beliefs came to be. Feels like we have to start at least by seeing that.

What folks are getting a tough lesson in right now: Institutions are people. They are not abstract forces that exist as firewalls or safeguards. They are just people who play a role and who perhaps have abided by norms, but whose decisions minute to minute shape the role those institutions play.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

Dems can: -oppose all Trump nominees until this EO is withdrawn -deny unanimous consent to slow senate proceedings -vote no on all cloture -force quorum calls at every chance It’s a constitutional crisis. There is absolutely no reason the Senate should be connecting business as usual.

Frank Wilhoit seems very topical today: "Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect." crookedtimber.org/2018/03/21/l...
Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time.

For millenia, conservatism had no name, because no other model of polity had ever been proposed. “The king can do no wrong.” In practice, this immunity was always extended to the king’s friends, however fungible a group they might have been. Today, we still have the king’s friends even where there is no king (dictator, etc.). Another way to look at this is that the king is a faction, rather than an individual.

As the core proposition of conservatism is indefensible if stated baldly, it has always been surrounded by an elaborate backwash of pseudophilosophy, amounting over time to millions of pages. All such is axiomatically dishonest and undeserving of serious scrutiny. Today, the accelerating de-education of humanity has reached a point where the market for pseudophilosophy is vanishing; it is, as The Kids Say These Days, tl;dr . All that is left is the core proposition itself — backed up, no longer by misdirection and sophistry, but by violence.

So this tells us what anti-conservatism must be: the proposition that the law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone, and cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone.

Saw a "Democratic strategist" say "we have to earn people's trust back." Just mind-boggling that so many don't understand how this works. Did voters in 2024 say "I trust the Republican Party"? No. They were mad at those in power. Democrats have to get them mad at Republicans. It's not complicated.
