Geneviève-Louise Bouillat worked as a flower and landscape painter at Sèvres from 1776 to 1798. Her husband was also a porcelain painter there, they share the same 'Y' painter's mark. This is a cup and saucer she decorated, a lovely scene; the cup depicts a resting dog in a garden.
Coffee cup and saucer (gobelet litron), 1786
GENEVIÈVE-LOUISE BOUILLAT
BORN VINCENNES 14 FEBRUARY 1738 - died after 1798
ACTIVE 1776 - 1798
MARK: Scrolling y, usually to the left of the interlaced L’s.
Geneviève-Louise Bouillat was born to become a painter and decorator at Sèvres for she may have been born at the Vincennes factory. Her father, Louis-Jean Thévenet, was among the first painters hired there, while her mother Françoise-Elisabeth Thévenet was a painter of molded flowers, the factory’s top-selling item at the time. Both of her parents were employees for three decades, and later even her brother Jean-Baptiste became a flower painter beginning in 1752.
After the family moved with the factory from Vincennes to Sèvres, Geneviève met a new hire in the workshop, Edme-François Bouillat, and married him when she turned 20 in 1768. Though Bouillat had a longer and more successful career, Geneviève spent even more years surrounded by a family of dedicated flower painters and decorators. She and Edme-François had at least two children: François Bouillat fils, a flower, landscape and bird painter at Sèvres, active from 1785-93, and a daughter, Mlle. Rachel Bouillat, also a painter of flowers during three periods: 1783-92, 1796-98 (after becoming Mme. Maqueret, née Bouillat) and later in 1816-20.
Since her father, mother and husband were two of the best decorators at Vincennes/Sèvres Geneviève could achieve her potential with the instruction of some of the best teachers available. Based on her dates of employment against those of her children she may have waited to join the painters’ workshop after they reached their teenage years only to became employees on their own.

Detail of the saucer.
Geneviève mostly painted simple flower decoration, but her work may sometimes be confused with the very similar work by her husband, especially since they both used variants of the Y/y mark in the same location relative to the factory mark. She dabbled in painting landscapes after her husband, and may have tried other decoration as well. She disappears from the factory employment rolls in 1798 after a 22-year-long career in a second generation of three.
Her mark, the y on the right.

#earlymodern #bookhistory Workshop Call for Papers: Women’s Professional Networks in the Early Modern Book Trade, University of Edinburgh 6-7 May 2027 Please feel free to share with anyone who might be interested!
Call for Papers
Women’s Professional Networks in the Early Modern Book Trade
University of Edinburgh
6-7 May 2027Over the past two decades, women’s book history and feminist bibliography have exploded with renewed interest. Even so, women’s work is still to an extent seen as an exception or curiosity. It examines them from a gender history perspective, asking to what extent their relationships were influenced or determined by constructions of femininity. Proposals should therefore involve a dimension of gender analysis beyond simply the inclusion of female subjects.

This conference will seek to explore (but is not limited to) to the following themes and questions:

*Gendered Networks. To what extent were professional book trade networks gendered? How did these networks intersect with other types of women’s networks, whether they be familial, friendly, religious, political, or intellectual?
*Identity and Representation. Did women express professional solidarity with other women, and how did this manifest? How did women’s self-representation in imprints and paratext differ from men’s?
*Legal and Structural Considerations. In what ways were women’s professional networks dependent on legal structures of inheritance in their region, or participation in guilds? How did these networks stretch across economic and class divisions?
*Digital Approaches. Can digital humanities tools such as network visualisation effectively help document these relationships?

The conference will also host the launch of a new collaborative database sourcing biographical information about women in the early modern book trade.

Contributions will be published in a volume of conference proceedings, to be submitted by the end of 2027.

Proposals for papers of maximum 20 minutes, including title, an abstract of up to 300 words, and a biography of up to 150 words should be sent to Dr Elise Watson, elise.watson@ed.ac.uk, by 20 December 2026. While all papers will be delivered in person, virtual attendance will be available as well.
