I once was denied coverage for an orthopedic MRI (despite calling insurance first to make sure the MRI would be covered) because I didn’t have prior authorization for the contrast dye injection, which was “a procedure.” Somehow I/my primary care doctor was supposed to know this.

One of my strong beliefs is that new teachers should spend their first year team-teaching with outstanding veteran teachers. I think teaching would improve significantly and we’d retain more teachers.

I have a colleague who has given up correcting people when they use an “ah” sound instead of a short “a” sound (as in “apple”) in her name and I think this is exactly why the wrong pronunciation sticks.

(Not just a general dislike of private equity, which is plenty, but also they immediately engaged in slimy practices like sending me “PAST DUE” invoices for services I wasn’t subscribed to)

I just looked at my heat pump (prompted by my lovely wife) and yeech! Consider this your reminder to clean yours (if you have one) before winter. Relatedly, Twin Citizens, do you have anyone you like for maintenance/tuneups? The company who did my install got bought up by private equity.

We’ve gone from Google letting its “Don’t be evil” mission go to companies waving giant red flags yelling “Contract with us, we’re thoroughly evil!”

One of my kids will finish his bachelor’s degree in elementary ed this spring at age 30. Taking your time is okay. He worked in various education-related jobs with different age levels until he figured out what direction best suited him.

The early part of college is a great time to just explore and see what tugs at your interests. My college has counselors who offer career counseling—that might be a resource at your kid’s school too. Worth looking for!

I have been on the parent end of this and teach at a community college, with lots of dual-enrollment students and lots of traditional-aged undecided students. First, it’s okay and it’s perfectly normal not to know what you want to do! But I know it’s anxiety-provoking anyway.

When I asked, my doc was like, do you want to skip checking and just get another dose? (I’m a teacher and have had colleagues who had known TB exposure, so measles is definitely in the realm of possibility.) So that’s what I did.

Have you ever wanted to hear @cjdenial.bsky.social, @thetattooedprof.bsky.social, @liznorell.bsky.social, and me talk about the need for resisting AI in education? If so, you're in luck! On October 13th, we're doing a reprise of a session on this topic, and we're hosting it on Zoom FREE OF CHARGE.

I don’t think it was but we should all be friends! I don’t think I’ve used Tomoe River. Right now, I’m using a Kokuyo notebook for work and Midori for home. I have daydreams about owning a cozy stationery shop.

I fucking love JetPens. The Kokuyo paper is indeed very nice

One thing people often don't realize is when someone is disabled, they might have energy limiting issues. They may not have the energy to socialize at times. It doesn't mean they hate you when they're not as around. They may be struggling. You should check on them & not assume the worst.

Okay, this turned out to be my favorite thing. Nikkolette’s Macarons had little clicky macarons (in addition to perfect real macarons). I liked mine so much my wife talked me into buying an extra.

It does seem the end goal is to get people reliant on it so they will pay anything once companies start charging at the consumer level.

I almost never get people trying waste my time on the doors in the suburbs. If they engage, they genuinely want conversation.

I’m in Minnesota and went dual-fuel (natural gas furnace heats below 15F). Replaced a 30+ year old A/C. We cool significantly more now (73F instead of 78F, only turning it on when it got really hot) and it’s still cheaper than with the old A/C.
