I think people should seriously think about coming to IIEMCA, not least of all coz you'd be able to play around with ideology x emca with me and Emma in a pre-conf workshop

How To Study Ideology in
Social Interaction
with Emma Tennent and Elle Henderson
Description: Too often, analysing ideology is presented as antithetical to robust data-driven
EMCA. We believe this is a mistake. In our own work, we are trying to speak about ideology while
maintaining rigorous EMCA analyses. This workshop is for those who are interested in studying
ideology empirically (or any related ‘big picture issues’ often deemed off limits).
Our objectives are to explore some of the ways ideology is relevant in different aspects of social
interaction; and how different analytic tools (e.g. domains of organisation; epistemic, deontic,
affective orders; etc.) can be ‘keys’ to explicate them.
We are not going to offer a singular tidy definition of what ideology is or how to study it. Instead,
we want to explore alongside workshop attendees the utility of these different EMCA ‘keys’ in
helping us ground discussions of ideology in specific interactional practices.
In this full-day workshop, we will work collaboratively to explore the different ways we can study
ideology in social interaction.
We’ll start with a brief overview of some of the key concepts and debates. Ideology is a term
used in many different fields in many different ways. As we work through some of these different
definitions, we’ll discuss how different analytic concepts commonly deployed within EMCA can
render aspects of ideology visible.
We will work through a range of data extracts unpacking different conceptualisations of ideology
as they are manifest in observable practices of interaction.
Facilitators:
Emma Tennent is a Senior Lecturer in Communication at Te Herenga Waka and Elle Henderson
is an academic staff member at Open Polytechnic. We both have PhDs in Discursive Psychology
from Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington and have been working together for many
years. Our research has explored ideology in different forms (although not always using that term
explicitly) and we are gr…
