Letter to @andyburnham.bsky.social @labouruk.bsky.social Dear PM, While I understand that there are several media stories, think tanks & the Tories imploring you to cut welfare spending in the autumn budget, I’d ask that you also see it from the side of disabled people and not cut welfare.

@andyburnham.bsky.social Don’t cut welfare or restrict it for younger people or add conditions PIP is non means tested and for all disabled people who need it to help with extra costs, it is not an out of work benefit Rhetoric this week against disabled people has been horrendous My comments:👇

Any conversation about cost of living immediately falls into the “working people” trap and media commentators discuss welfare cuts at the same time Big 🚩 especially as a disabled person 😬 This doesn’t feel like change It feels the same as the last few years where anyone not working is excluded

Some important priorities for @andyburnham.bsky.social - Protect welfare don’t cut it - Listen to disabled people - Help everyone with cost of living not just “working people & families” - Allowing Milburn/blairites to influence DWP policy is very worrying - No new oil/gas drilling - Fund the NHS

Many MPs & think tanks on the right oppose wealth tax Instead they want you to punch down To cut welfare to spend on defence To push more disabled, low income, children & pensioners into further poverty But an answer is don’t punch down, tax the wealthy instead The current economy favours the rich

The huge welfare cuts Labour secretly planned offscreen then sprung on the public didn’t fail because MPs were weak and timorous. They failed because the public recoiled in horror and disgust. Hoon et al *have to* tell themselves it was the former, because the latter is an insuperable barrier.
Geoff Hoon, former defence sec and chief whip, on John Healey's resignation
Former Labour defence secretary Geoff Hoon has said he hopes Labour MPs will think again about their opposition to welfare reform in order to boost defence spending.
Speaking to GB News, he said: "I've been through, when I was Defence Secretary, several spending rounds. It's always a tough business, not only dealing with the Chancellor and the Treasury, but also recognising that whatever money you get for your department has to come at the expense of money for some other department, so it's always a bruising process...
"The money has to come from somewhere. I don't think this is the right time for significant tax increases; I don't think the public would support that. Therefore, we have to look at some other aspect of government spending.
"One of the other jobs that I had in government was chief whip. I suspect if I was still in that position, I would be having quiet consultations with Labour MPs who were reluctant to see welfare reform, to see whether they might have changed their minds in the interim, recognising all of the financial pressures on the government at the present time.
