Soon the board was filled with their forces, as they played out the pageantry of the first stage. Territory was established. Geni was an aggressive player, forcing Kallista into a defensive posture. But this of course had a weakness that even Kallista was aware of, despite not being a competitive player; the further they got into the first stage, the more over-extended Geni would be. If she played conservatively enough, and looked like enough of a naive fool, Kallista could bait her into weakening her flank.

Of course, she caught Kallista at it only two tiles into the change in rhythm. "Ah. You do know what you're doing after all. Very sneaky, Kallista, very sneaky."

Kallista took a quick sip of the dregs of her coffee to hide the rising blush. "I don't know as much as you, perhaps, but I know enough."

I feel like many old cities with rich histories are like this. Hells, at this point I have a second home in Montréal, lived in DC, spent a collective several months in NYC, and I'm still terrified of setting my novel in any of these areas.
