BREAKING NEWS CONSUMER'S HANDBOOK
1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
2. Don't trust anonymous sources.
3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information.
4. There's almost never a second shooter.
5. Pay attention to the language the media uses.
"We are getting reports"... could mean anything.
"We are seeking confirmation"... means they don't have it.
"[News outlet] has learned"... means it has a scoop or is going out on limb.
6. Look for news outlets close to the incident.
7. Compare multiple sources.
8. Big news brings out the fakers. And photoshoppers.
9. Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you.

![A quote titled “Does it Matter?” from Painted Flock framed by a wintry branch. At the bottom is the blue cover featuring a masc person and a child in a city street, along with icons of numerous places it is available (iBooks, Barnes & Nobles, Kobo, Google Play, Fable, Smashwords, Itchio) and an indication it has a $2 discount on itchio.
The quote is:
“Hear my wise advice, then: if you love her, doofus, you should tell her.”
“You make it sound so simple.”
“It is! It’s just three words! I. Love. You. Look, they just came out of my mouth, no problem.”
“Not that part.” Clémence rubbed a hand over ols face. “How do you even tell when you’re falling in love? What does that even mean, Zita? Because life-changing rush of pure, unequivocal adoration I’m supposed to have, it’s not here.”
[…]
“Does it matter, if you don’t get romantic obsessions? There’s plenty of other feelings to choose from.”](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:gavtvpuqn2chnawosye5xlvv/bafkreigpu462esll2ozkttjdqbr5mdrprayhnmv2ia3nnftodyqmpuzuaq)
