For the past year, Seattle has been operating a recovery center for opioid overdoses. Staff say the center is diverting people away from hospital emergency rooms — and allowing them quicker access to new types of medications for opioid use disorder.

Seattle’s ORCA overdose recovery center downtown has started 800 people on medication for opioid use disorder in its first year. The Seattle Fire Department says the 24/7 center allows them to take fewer people to the hospital ER. Fatal overdoses have declined 25% in King County compared to the same period last year.
