there's a new and even better program for detecting spam bots. it's super effective! *several hours later* you must construct additional pylons

Given that the accounts in this spam network are friendly and rarely blocked, one might wonder why they are a potential problem. The answer: the accounts occasionally switch to posting affiliate marketing links for various products including a "AI detector" browser extension of dubious efficacy.
Post from a sci-fi book themed account posting spam links to a novelPost from a tech themed AI account advertising a link to a browser extension that purportedly acts as an "AI Shield".

The accounts in this spam network have been active ever since they were created two months ago. Over 98% of the posts consists of quotes of random Bluesky users. The text is often friendly and affirmative in nature. Interactions that lead to blocks are relatively rare.

Here's a riddle: What does this hodgepodge of accounts- covering a range of topics from sci-fi books to tech news and politics- have in common? Spoiler alert: They are all LLM / AI reply bots that spam hundreds of users each day with quote posts.

Nothing says "NO BOTs🚫" quite like using the same photos and bios.

there was an attempt
A screenshot of a Bluesky bio from a now suspended account. The bio includes a bracketed phase that suggests that a LLM prompt was used to generate the description, but something went wrong in the process of doing so.

Special shoutout to this fresh spam account, which only has punctuation in the description. The code 💯 has bugs in it, lol.

A strange anomaly appears: 1343/6123 (21%) of all Bluesky accounts renamed on Dec 16th updated their profiles with near-identical descriptions in Portuguese that translate to "I'm [age] and I live in [location]"
A screenshot of a list of 6 user profiles. Each profile has a unique profile and display name, but all share similar descriptions that read:

Eu tenho 24 e moro em Maria Eduarda do Norte.
Eu tenho 31 e moro em Yasmin do Sul.
Eu tenho 45 e moro em Santos do Sul.

and so forth.

*5 days later* We regret to inform you the suspected shooter is a weeb
A tweet from Luigi Mangione originally posted in April 2024 that reads:
Modern Japanese urban environment is an evolutionary mismatch for the human animal.

The solution to falling birthdates isn’t immigration. It’s cultural.

Encourage natural human interaction, sex, physical fitness and spirituality:
* ban Tenga fleshlights and “Japan Real Hole” custom pornstar pocket pussies being sold in Don Quixote grocery stores
* replace conveyor belt sushi and restaurant vending machine ordering, with actual human interaction with a waiter
* replace 24/7 eSports cafes where young males earn false fitness signals via Tekken fighting and Overwatch shooting games, with athletics in school
* heavily stigmatize maid cafes where lonely salarymen pay young girls to dress as anime characters and perform anime dances for them
* revitalize traditional Japanese culture (Shintoism, Okinawan karate, onsen, etc)

As it turns out, all but one or two of the 9858+ reposts are spam. Every single reposting account has zero posts of its own and has a random fill-in-the-blanks description. A chart of the creation times shows clear unnatural spikes, which indicates the use of multiple methods of account creation.
A histogram chart showing the number of accounts created per hour over a number of days. A number of large spikes showing a 5-10x increase are scattered throughout the distribution.

inspired: using disaster warnings to spot spam replies from argumentative LLM bots
Reply from @dashka51.bsky.social to a skeet about a natural disaster: "I'd be happy to help! However, I'd like to respectfully disagree with the tweet. Earthquakes and tsunamis are devastating natural disasters that affect countless lives, and framing them as a personal emotional state diminishes the gravity of the situations."

Apropos of nothing, I used Nightshade/Glaze on a photo to protect it from content scrapers and I am amused to see that the result makes it look like there's dust in the lens. Uncannily accurate.
