Why I'm Not Getting Work Done Today: COVID and Flu shots. Painful, relentless muscle ache.
My unexpectedly hairy shoulder, shirt sleeve pulled back, showing two different round adhesive bandages covering injection spots. Just coincidentally, my book is visible in the background.

I've had a really hard time getting back into the swing of foresight work this year, and I've come to recognize that it's because so many of the people with massive wealth and extensive power have chosen to limit, control, and extinguish our futures, all without accountability or consequence.

Every now and then it’s nice to see life just going on. A mourning dove nested on our porch light. This morning I found that it has two chicks.

Dolly Parton passed. I was a fan of her music, but also a fan of her as a person. Particularly her kindness. And her work on literacy. And her stance on vaccination. And animal rights. And... She used her powers for good. She wasn't perfect, but she damn sure tried to be. RIP, Dolly.

So, completely non-important question: In the new season of Ted Lasso, a character is named "Alice Chilton." Is that a reference to the 1960's musician and/or the 1987 Replacements song? A subtle wink? A deep reference to pay off later? Or just a coincidence? There's nothing out there about it.

Because bookies have a bit of old cachet to them, a hint of mafia and maybe even a touch of cool, while Kalshi and Polymarket are nerds manipulating markets.

Jamais Cascio @cascio.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
Why don't we refer to Kalshi and Polymarket as "Bookies?" As far as I can tell, there seems to be little real-world difference between wagering on a sporting event at a bookmaker and making a "prediction" about that same event at a prediction market.

4th of July, 2026 From "What If?" (1977), #44 (came out in 1984). By Peter B. Gillis (writer) and Sal Buscema (artist)
Five panels from a comic book featuring Captain America. Cap, having beaten the fascist imposter, turns to chastise the crowd of citizens. The imposter may have said that America was great, but... from panel #3: "Well, I say America is nothing! Without its ideals -- its commitment to the freedom of all men, America is a piece of trash! A nation is nothing! A flag is a piece of cloth!"

The big one is "Social Transition Stress Disorder" -- STSD. "...a broad range of psychological effects arising from rapid, discontinuous social change. Known triggers for STSD include significant economic disruption or transitions, encounters [...] with new technologies, and paradigm shifts." (p55)

Example: "There is no greater accomplishment than disrupting a society's memespace. Once the traditional hierarchy of ideas is overturned, all memes become equal, even the most ludicrous or hysterical. *Especially* the most ludicrous or hysterical, as a point of fact." (p16)

So I'm reading over the text of the Transhuman Space game book I wrote in 2002, "Broken Dreams." Again, 2002. And if you set aside the conceit that it's set in 2100, it's remarkable how much stuff I hit on back then that's highly relevant now.

Today is the last day to tell the FCC to reject the proposal to require a warning label for TV programs that talk about transgender, non-binary, and gender identity topics. GLAAD has a good summary here, and a direct link to comment: glaad.org/fcc Here's what I posted (text copied in alt):
Comment from Jamais Cascio:
We have decided, as a country, that the televised portrayal of some behaviors may be disturbing enough to warrant a warning at the beginning of a program. But these are *behaviors* -- smoking, acts of violence, nudity, even language like swearing or sexual innuendo. We do not need, and we must not have, standardized warnings for ideas and basic existence. This is such a common sense concept that it's shocking to me that it's even up for debate. Discussion and portrayal of LGBTQ+ lives and concerns, including gender identity, should not be subject to a warning. Showing the existence of human beings with transgender or non-binary identities is not a threat. Discussion of the concept of gender identity is not dangerous. I believe whole-heartedly, with my sixty years of lived experience, that there should be no required warning about transgender, non-binary, or gender identity topics or portrayal. Please reject this proposal.

I really doubt that the press is going to show much sympathy for the millions of us who take SSRIs. Serious depression is not something that the press deems an issue worth examining. But it is not an overstatement to say that SSRIs are the difference between living and dying for millions of us.

The 28th Virginia battle flag is a Confederate battle flag that belonged to the 28th Virginia Infantry Regiment. Captured by the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg, the flag was brought to Minnesota and exhibited at the state's capitol for several years before passing into the permanent collection of the Minnesota Historical Society after 1896 where it has remained since.

This moment is so utterly without precedent that I suspect many global organizations and leaders are waiting to respond because they simply cannot believe that it is happening. Call it "suspension of belief" -- an unwillingness to accept the reality we see because it is so absurd and out-of-bounds.

This worship of efficiency kills creativity. Every transcript I have, every piece of research, I go over again & again, looking for detail, pattern, illuminating anecdote. It’s not efficient. I flail sometimes! But it’s essential. It’s how I learn to tell the story to myself, so I can tell it to you

It's hard to be hopeful right now, everything is a mess. But seeing the Artemis II launch successfully is surprisingly emotional for me. I really want this to work. I'm old enough to have seen Challenger explode, and the tension I feel during the first few minutes of launch never really goes away.
