I was accused of being sensationalist or exaggerating when our 2022 research paper predicted one in 15 visible points in the sky would be a moving satellite. I think maybe we were actually too conservative. I hate this so very very much.

@sundogplanets wait!? C’mon, physics that door like Archimedes. A brace up top, incremental lifts using pivots (fulcrum) and and prybars (lever), and bingo! Of course, you’ll need to wait until you’ve got friends to move or add to fulcrums and stuff, maybe to hold your ladder while you climb up […]

@cdarwin I mean, it’d be funny for the few years when he was no longer president and thus blocked from being there. But I kinda doubt he’ll live long enough to wear an orange jumpsuit or exit gracefully. Funnier still if a later president decided to revert the golf course to wildland preserve […]

A B&W photo of a person standing next to a stack of printed paper as high as the top of their head. This is Margaret Hamilton, at work as a Software Engineer and the leader of a team of extremely specialised programmers who worked for NASA. The photo was taken in 1969, and it shows a physical form if her work since she joined the Apollo project in 1965 (she joined at the age of 29 by my calculation). My interpretation of the expression on her face is a mix of pride and mild amusement. She has glasses, long, straight hair, and neat office attire. Margaret Hamilton has her hands placed gently on the stack of printouts to keep it all balanced upright. The pages appear to be arranged in bundles, ranging from 8-10 centimetres thick, to 20cm thick or more. The resulting stack of printouts is physically impressive for being an unusual feat, and it represents something even more impressive: it's the printed form of the source-code she and the team she led wrote for the NASA Apollo project. Their software ran on the Apollo Guidance Computer that was that on board each Apollo command module and Apollo Lunar Module. The Apollo Guidance Computer onboard the Eagle was an essential flight instrument for Neil Armstrong when he piloted the craft to land on the surface of the moon.

Another tool of the Bodger’s Art is wire-wrapping. Very thin insulated wire and a special tool are used to make temporary but strong connections between pins. You will find computers in museums from the 1950s and 60s made this way.
A wire-wrapping tool which resembles a screwdriver with a slot in the shaft, is used to wrap 0.25mm thick wire around a pin.A closeup of a wire-wrapped joint, about six turns of wire tightly grip a square pin that is under a millimeter across.

Sure, saxony-anhalt’s fascists are bad news, but the resentment they harbor is, like here, against oligarch-centered economic policies. The movements are not left vs right - they’re up vs down, a bipolar effort to claw back lives of dignity from corrupt, greedy, powerful men.
