Incredible reporting from @streetsblogla.bsky.social. The City of LA has all but stopped repaving streets in large swaths of the city, especially lower income neighborhoods. la.streetsblog.org/2026/10/02/n...

Fundamentally Mayor Bass doesn’t understand that *she* is the one who needs to bring officials together, host press conferences and inform the public. That’s the job. That she doesn’t get that, over and over, is why we need to elect someone who does: Nithya Raman. www.latimes.com/california/s...

I'd love to read more reporting in the local press on the sentiments of LA Millenials going into the November elections. 30-39 year olds are the cities largest cohort, followed by 20-29 year olds. I don't think we've seen enough coverage of their frustrations with how things are going.

I honestly think LA has arrived as a transit / sports town: E Line eastbound filling up with Dodger fans and we’re still west of the 405.

Here are LA and SF at the same scale. We really just don't have a bike network to speak of across the densest part of Los Angeles outside of downtown.

Caltrans is still in the sprawl business, proposing a $40M diverging diamond interchange outside of Bay Area supercommuter suburb, Tracy, with a CEQA mitigated negative declaration. The region violates federal law on PM & ozone pollution. ACE commuter rail runs nearby. ceqanet.lci.ca.gov/2026070243

In 1964 when my mom was 10 years old in the San Gabriel Valley, she would go weeks and months without seeing mile-high peaks just down the road. That year Los Angeles County violated the pollution standard for Carbon Monoxide, a common tailpipe emission, on 366 days - it was a leap year.

When you combine with this jobs map, you can see that DTLA developed as a jobs center and Bunker Hill to Westlake developed as the suburb like 140 years ago and that's still what we have today.

It's been a while since I looked at LA Metro ridership. Here's monthly average weekday ridership from Mar-2019 to Mar-2026. And avg YOY change from Mar-2020 to Mar-2026. Metro was steadily adding riders until Trump began his unlawful and unconscionable immigration raids (reposting to fix a chart).

Check this from my colleague Joel Reynolds, a pillar of the environmental movement, on the problems with freeway expansion and the better way forward. From 2011! 15 years ago! www.nrdc.org/bio/joel-rey...
Screen cap of blog reading: First, we can stop spending time and scarce transportation funding on planning, designing and permitting obsolete highway projects that will only perpetuate our paralysis. Traffic studies have long established that we can't just pave our way out of congestion. We've tried that approach for 50 years, and gridlock is where it's gotten us.

Second, we need to promote rapid transit, congestion pricing, carpooling, bus-only lanes, transit-oriented development and other 21st century solutions. Our quality of life and our economic future — and those of our children — depend on it.

Fun LA transit fact: if you start the clock at its incorporation in 1850, LA has had an electric rail line to Long Beach for more years than not! 95 years with electric train. 81 without. And that includes 1850-1879 when electric passenger trains didn’t…y’know…exist. Anyway, LA is a train city!
1850 to 1902 -- no train (52 years)
1902 to 1961 -- train (59 years)
1961 to 1990 -- no train (29 years)
1990 to 2026 -- train (36 years)

"Superusers" who are 90th percentile gasoline consumers (due to less efficient vehicles and/or long commutes) would save $490 a month in fuel and maintenance.

Cool new tool from Coltura shows savings from switching to an EV vs gas car. The average Californian would save $175 in fuel and maintenance costs a month using an EV. I like looking at monthly savings because most cars are leased or financed. data.coltura.org/ev-savings-i...
