This is a "least bad" outcome of a self-inflicted problem from Duke University. Is it better than the collection being atomized and shipped all over the place? Yes. Is it a travesty that one of the world's wealthiest private Universities divested from their herbarium? Definitely yes.

The Harvard “grade cap” issue is about how institutions try to solve a problem without solving the problem. Problem: a lot of professors don’t know how to teach, nor do they have time to teach well. (This last part is very important and, importantly, insoluble in the current system.)

🌱🪴🏫 Has your college / university built a greenhouse recently? We're at the early stages of a major renovation to our science building, including the greenhouse. I'd LOVE to get a functioning head house with dedicated rooms for teaching, research, and collections. All advice/guidance & help welcome!

Seeds of annual & perennial populations of #Mimulus guttatus exhibit differential responses to cold stratification New #AJB research by Alec Chiono, Elisabeth Sellinger & @ncemery.bsky.social doi.org/10.1002/ajb2... #botany #plantscience #monkeyflower
A figure showing the proportion of viable seeds that germinated after two cold stratification treatments (not stratified or stratified) for annual and perennial populations of Mimulus guttatus. Raw data are shown as points; dashed lines connect maternal-family-level raw estimates, while solid lines show estimates from 200 random posterior draws. Seeds from annual populations were more likely to germinate after cold stratification while seeds from perennial populations were less likely to germinate.

Hey #PopGen #EEB #PUI friends! Do you have a cool paper demonstrating the power 💪 of "modern" PopGen that would be exciting to upper-level undergrads? I feel like students leave the PopGen unit thinking it's some kind of dead science b/c we're limited to introducing simple models in Evol classes. 😢

Warming alters floral volatile emissions and nectar production in subalpine plants, with potential effects on pollinator attraction and herbivore interactions. These findings highlight the need for long-term studies to better understand how temperature changes influence plant-animal interactions and reproductive success.
