Wow! I have a lot of reading to do. Is the criteria: writing, imagination or consistency? Of the authors I have read (35?) I would have given “great” also to Hesse, Grass, Ishiguro, Mahfouz, and only “okay” to Saramago and Munro but reading in translation should probably invalidate my opinion.

I agree, but we had provincial Liberals in power in BC who were not affiliated with the Federal Liberals. They are using the terms conservative and liberal as descriptors, I presume (and to deliberately obfuscate).
