Your feel-good story of the day: This 12-year-old kid who went viral at the 2021 Tour of Britain has signed for a Dutch grassroots club and development team that's a feeder partner of Team Visma-Lease a Bike (the team of the rider who gave him the bidon). www.cyclingnews.com/pro-cycling/...

British Gas & Centrica profits exceed £56bn since privatisation. 43% of UK households are in fuel poverty. 120,000 people a year die in fuel poverty. Bills hiked. Industries (e.g. steel) struggle. Prime Ministers may change but no govt curbs profiteering, challenges neoliberalism.

The problem with digital books is that you can always find what you are looking for but you need to go to a bookstore to find what you weren't looking for. ~ Paul Krugman

Tories launch disability benefits review to cut welfare bill by £23bn. The Party that gave us the longest ever queue for the NHS, privatised water, energy, social care and more, is gunning for the disabled. Silence on corporate welfare, ending tax abuse, compassion. archive.ph/b3hip

One of the biggest problems with green technology is that big businesses can’t make endless money from it. Oil/gas is a consumable that they make money from pumping, transporting, refining etc. LOTS of money year over year The same is not true for wind/solar. That’s the biggest hurdle.

“Caring for myself is not self indulgence, it is self preservation.” Audre Lorde We’re allowed to pause and look after yourself. You matter too. #kindness #positivity #SelfCare Picture by Positively Present
A bright illustrated grid titled Self Care for December, featuring small colourful drawings such as biscuits shaped like trees and stars, a cassette tape, a snow-day cat in a scarf, a red and blue letterbox, a calendar showing the 13th, holly, a candle, a pair of snowflakes, a window decorated with festive lights, a berry sprig, a shovel in snow, a cowboy hat and boot, a small vintage train, and a cosy snow-covered cabin. Each illustration is paired with a short phrase about self care, including enjoying moments mindfully, replaying happy memories, sending love into the world, making plans for next year, forgiving mistakes, identifying unique traits, keeping track of goals, taking care of your space, and staying close to those you love. Picture by Positively Present.

After three days spent with AI researchers from around the world, one thing is very clear to me: we need the humanities and social sciences more than ever. We need philosophers to ask about ethics and responsibility. We need sociologists to understand how technology reshapes relationships, 1/

Why academic publishing is broken — and how researchers are fighting back

I remain gravely concerned by today’s welfare announcement, to put it mildly. Cutting social security for disabled people will only deepen poverty and inequality. This wasn’t in our manifesto and it isn’t what people voted for when they elected a Labour government.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

I'm old enough to remember when a computer didn't automatically connect to the internet, it used to make a screaming noise. We should have listened.
