Note from my notebook (2018). Still relevant.
THE TEN STAGES OF BOOK WRITING:

1. Faffing.
2. Terror.
3. More faffing.
4. ‘SHIT I AM SO BEHIND.’
5.  Zombie who can’t think about anything but book and dreams about book every night.
6. ‘This is awful.’
7.  ‘This might be OK, and that faffing might have been of benefit after all.’
8. ‘Oh my god I hope I don’t die before I’m done.’
9. ‘DONE! Never doing that again.’
10. Write another book.

You're looking at a 200 year-old wisteria vine at Byakugou-ji Temple in Tamba, Hyogo, Japan. The delicate pink/purple blossoms create an otherworldly place where magic can happen. But here's an interesting fact: wisteria are in the legume family (Fabaceae). This is a magic beanstalk.
Taken from a Reddit post, a framework supports purple-pink blossoms that blot out the top of the photo, shading the light a magical color, with a dark vine stem in the distance.

I do sometimes actually finish projects. My Dark Academia, which I finished in early 2025, but didn't get to wear until this year. My first seriously large color work project, which is now baggy on me due to weight loss during my cancer treatment last year.

View from my window this morning. Summer is definitely on its way.
Looking out through a window onto a suburban street with a flowering hedge, green trees, and a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. The foreground is dark, shot from inside, with cups full of pens lined up against an old, early 60s style window frame.

Felt the need to take a break from color work, so gave in to the temptation to cast on a Three Season Pullover from @woolandpine.bsky.social The yarn is Malabrigo Rios in Glitter. The suggestion is for a cotton/linen worsted, but when I saw the Rios, my mind immediately went "That." #knitting

The bushes around the house are blooming beautifully this year, complete with new growth where there had previously been bare wood. This is due to the new gardener, who has a delicate touch with his tools. I've watch him shave just the barest sliver off, shaping them and encouraging new growth.
Closeup of a flowering bush filled with predominantly orange and red flowers, though there are a few purple ones poking their heads up.

The Pantages Theatre in Hollywood is a great place for small details. The lobby and house are filled with amazing Art Deco style, which was lovingly restored in 2000, including these tiles from one of the Ladies' Rooms, carrying through the striking theme of the building.
A closeup of black tile with the top row featuring an art deco pattern of pink and rose curved lines on a dark and pale green background. In the center of each tile is a dramatic black "V." The tiles below are solid black and the wall above is cream-colored.

Finished our last trip to Disneyland until September (passes blocked for the summer) and, as is our habit, finished the day at the Grand Californian's Hearthstone Lounge. Which gave me a chance to appreciate the beautiful stained glass in the doors of their front entrance, one of my favorite sights.
An elaborate stained-glass panel, depicting a view of California forest, broken up by the dark brown wood frame of the door in which it is set, all done in the Craftsman style.

Up next, not that I haven't read THE BIG SLEEP before. I was first introduced to Raymond Chandler at the Scene of the Crime bookstore back in the 80s. But I was waxing lyrical about his descriptions the other day, and decided it was time to revisit his work.

I love the way Gimli positively glows when the light hits him. I don't think he does it consciously, but that spot seems to have the right amount of "toasty" at certain times of the day. And I probably need to scrub that portion of the floor down. :: sigh ::

the world needs more guinea pig cartographers
A guinea pig cartographer works amongst his maps, using his instruments, with a quill and ink next to him on a wooden table; he looks at the viewer obliquely with a black background in a style that is reminiscent of early modern portraiture. The artist enjoys exploring the histories of art through homages to previous paintings in his whimsical works.
