Carly @carlyhommel.bsky.social · 08/10/2026As well as producing beautiful botanical watercolours, she was an early advocate for lichen’s symbiotic relationship between fungi & algae but the Linnaean Society dismissed her work because she was a woman -the patriarchy is why she became a children’s writer and illustrator. 010 0

Carly @carlyhommel.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I’m not sure what you mean. When did ‘too many’ try to get in and what went very badly? 100 0
Carly @carlyhommel.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Hmm. I guess if you want to be pedantic then citizenship was granted rather than opted in for, but that doesn’t change the fact that anyone could become a Roman citizen regardless of their origin. This ability to assimilate people from different cultures was a strength, don’t you think? 100 0
Carly @carlyhommel.bsky.social · 26/09/2026And before the edict of Caracalla there were several legal route to become a Roman citizen, so it was never that only people born to Roman parents could be Roman. Anyone could join the foederati or be a freed slave 070 0
Carly @carlyhommel.bsky.social · 26/09/2026It’s a bit more complicated than that but essentially the Roman Empire had various legal routes to citizenship so ‘barbarians’ could become Roman, identity wasn’t static in the way he’s describing in the past. He’s just appropriating this fictional dichotomy to justify his bigotry. 110 0
Carly @carlyhommel.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I think it meant ‘bearded’ (hence barber from the Latin) which the Romans were not (until Hadrian, later, at least), or that the Romans couldn’t understand them (their language sounded like ‘bar-bar-bar’ nonsense) and like you say became ‘uncivilised’ later 010 0
Carly @carlyhommel.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Does he also identify with the concept in Ancient Rome that everyone could become Roman if they wanted, no matter where you came from or what you looked like? I expect not… 3380 0

Carly @carlyhommel.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Not quite the same but my specialist physio did that to me once -they’d had a family bereavement. I imagine it’ll be because of something similar (surely not intentional). Hope they can reschedule asap 010 0
Carly @carlyhommel.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Fully behind this idea, USA should pay a *large* proportion of this having cut funding to research (thanks DOGE) which would have given early warning re glacial change -wouldn’t have prevented event but might have helped mitigate loss of life 001 0

Carly @carlyhommel.bsky.social · 01/09/2026I thoroughly enjoyed The Wolf That Chews Rocks. @russincheshire.bsky.social ‘s vivid descriptions of dog ownership were a little *too* intense at times, but it's an endearing look at the human-dog partnership and the science behind Baxter's chaotic behavior. 251 0
