For those of us who see Palestinians as human beings, this was Starmer's defining moment. It is not sustainable to behave in this way while leading the nominally progressive party in a two party system. Starmer's unpopularity is not one of life's great mysteries. www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8_s...

Thomas Tuchel feels like the most inscrutable England manager we’ve had in decades. There’s no way to rationalise calling up Trevoh Chalobah as replacement for Livramento. This isn’t to say it’s the wrong call – just that only Tuchel can really know why that decision has been made.

Chelsea and Man City in the FA Cup final. No other English clubs have systematically ignored, bent or broken the rules like both have done. In terms of trophies won, no other English clubs have been as successful over the past decade and a half either. The moral of the story - is that there is none.

I've spent my life arguing against all football fans being tarred with the same brush, but to not even acknowledge that Maccabi Tel Aviv's far-right fans posed a threat to public order, and Birmingham's Muslims in particular, is next-level racist gaslighting

Diogo Jota came across as warm, well rounded and unpretentious. Beyond that, he was fantastic to watch. An exhilarating, multifunctional forward who could do everything and played with scary intent. His near post finishing was pretty unrivalled too. I’ll miss him.

Tragic if some potential future Zarah Sultana or Faiza Shaheen read this and thought "maybe I shouldn't aspire to leadership or elected office. Maybe I should stay in the background and not cause problems for the movement" Obviously that's not what she meant to convey here but its a plausible effect

I don't want to dunk on Ash Sarkar. What I will say, just in the spirit of constructive discussion, is that there's a tension between this paragraph in her latest article, and the subclause at the very start of the next paragraph.

I’d really like if it a football podcast went near the fact that referees don’t do any cognitive bias training – or whatever it’s called. Vardy did this (and worse) everywhere he went and escaped censure season after season. There’s an obvious reason why.

CARICOM @caricom.uk · 25/01/2025
They seem to dislike Arteta more than they’ve disliked any other manager to have worked in this league. Hard not to read these differential refereeing decisions through that lens.

For what it’s worth, I think, at his core, Carragher gets to be himself on CBS, at his core that’s who he is. Which means the policing and stifling he does on Sky feel more dishonest and affected.
100
CARICOM @caricom.uk · 23/01/2025
Sky’s a weird one, though because they use Daniel Sturridge (mostly Sturridge) who’s happy to sing Usher and be as Black (his Blackness feels derived from African American Blackness more than British) as the producers need, to work as a contrast next to Roy Keane. That’s quite designed.
100
CARICOM @caricom.uk · 23/01/2025
Even the language and rhetoric we hear about Arsenal’s manager, fans and players – they’re soft, they want special treatment, their disciplinary record is awful, they’re too emotionally volatile – is racially coded. That’s the same stuff you hear about Black people!
100
CARICOM @caricom.uk · 23/01/2025
This rubs uncomfortably up against a country that has always wanted to superimpose some weird, pre-war, culturally homogenous identity onto itself. That’s why, when Arsenal ‘over celebrate’, Carragher – who dances around the CBS studio on weeknights – et al are right there.
100
CARICOM @caricom.uk · 23/01/2025
Arsenal are the predominant target of it. Which tracks, because Arsenal are the ‘cosmopolitan’, ‘multicultural’ club. Although no longer Wenger’s – 9 black outfielders away at Leeds – team, they still represent that (look into the stands), look at the book Clive Nwonka was able to produce.

CARICOM @caricom.uk · 23/01/2025
Whereas on Sky he’s Chief Commissioner of policing any and all forms of the same joy, especially when it comes from players. This is a uniquely British, and I would argue, highly racialised phenomena that has crept from places like Talksport into the Sky studios.
